Commutative Algebra
This volume contains refereed papers on themes explored at the AMS-IMS-SIAM Summer Research Conference, Commutative Algebra: Syzygies, Multiplicities, and Birational Algebra, held at Mount Holyoke College in 1992. The conference featured a series of one-hour invited lectures on recent advances in commutative algebra and interactions with such areas as algebraic geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics. The major themes of the conference were tight closure Hilbert functions, birational algebra, free resolutions and the homological conjectures, Rees algebras, and local cohomology. With contributions by several leading experts in the field, this volume provides an excellent survey of current research in commutative algebra.
Free Resolutions in Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry
The selected contributions in this volume originated at the Sundance conference, which was devoted to discussions of current work in the area of free resolutions. During late June and early July of 1987 a three week program (dubbed "microprogram") in Commutative Algebra was held at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute at Berkeley. The intent of the microprogram was to survey recent major results and current trends in the theory of commutative rings, especially commutative Noetherian rings. There was enthusiastic international participation. The papers in this volume, some of which are expository, some strictly research, and some a combination, reflect the intent of the program. Phantom Homology
This book uses a powerful new technique, tight closure, to provide insight into many different problems that were previously not recognized as related. The authors develop the notion of weakly Cohen-Macaulay rings or modules and prove some very general acyclicity theorems. These theorems are applied to the new theory of phantom homology, which uses tight closure techniques to show that certain elements in the homology of complexes must vanish when mapped to well-behaved rings. These ideas are used to strengthen various local homological conjectures. Initially, the authors develop the theory in positive characteristic, but it can be extended to characteristic 0 by the method of reduction to characteristic $p$. The book would be suitable for use in an advanced graduate course in commutative algebra.
Commutative Algebra: 150 Years with Roger and Sylvia Wiegand
This volume contains the combined Proceedings of the Second International Meeting on Commutative Algebra and Related Areas (SIMCARA) held from July 22–26, 2019, at the Universidade de São Paulo, São Carlos, Brazil, and the AMS Special Session on Commutative Algebra, held from September 14–15, 2019, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin. These two meetings celebrated the combined 150th birthday of Roger and Sylvia Wiegand. The Wiegands have been a fixture in the commutative algebra community, as well as the wider mathematical community, for over 40 years. Articles in this volume cover various areas of factorization theory, homological algebra, ideal theory, representation theory, homological rigidity, maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules, and the behavior of prime spectra under completion, as well as some topics in related fields. The volume itself bears evidence that the area of commutative algebra is a vibrant one and highlights the influence of the Wiegands on generations of researchers.
