Prison Gangs Behind Bars and Beyond
This book draws on a four-year ethnographic study conducted in the prisons and on the streets of Greater Manchester, England, to examine gangs and organised crime in the North of England. It includes the personal testimonies of active prison gang members and major organised crime figures, many of whom are behind bars, and some active street gang members. It presents an holistic account by exploring the linkages that exist between prisons and the streets, including the lines of continuity between gangs on both sides of the prison walls and how gang affiliation straddles this divide. It offers data on the region’s drug market (specifically Class A drugs) as this market is the lynchpin of the underworld, both within and without prison. It also includes the perspectives and insights of prison officers, police detectives, youth workers, active and former street gang members and the parents of deceased gang members. This is a ground-breaking, contemporary study, analysing English gang compositions and activities, with its findings and results based on qualitative interviews and ethnographic research.
Blind Spots in the Spotlight
This book brings under a magnifying glass a little explored, but significant topic - the communications changes of the National Bank of Romania after 2008. Given the similarities and differences between central banks’ mechanisms and practices adopted, its applicability and impact for other actors are incontestable. The research incorporates valuable details on how the National Bank of Romania’s communication changed during the Great Recession of 2008, as well as insightful data about the way in which different categories of public and media perceived this change. The timeliness and significance of this research are noticeable as the central banks already entered a new era of communication challenges triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic and recently by the Russia – Ukraine war. Lessons from the past can contribute to what researchers name the second revolution in communication, focusing on opening the central banks to the public and regaining trust, especially in such a difficult period.
Dis/abled Childhoods?
This edited collection explores the intersectionality of childhood and disability. Lucrarea de față își propune să adauge o cărămidă la acest edificiu, acela al criticii postcomunismului. Mai concret, este vorba despre postcomunismul românesc, fenomen care, desigur, nu poate fi înțeles adecvat în absența unei contextualizări mai largi, dar care, în același timp, are și unele caracteristici particulare, ce îl singularizează în raport cu experiențele similare din restul fostului „lagăr socialist”: anticomunismul agresiv, nedemocratic, prăbușirea politicilor sociale, o campanie de privatizări haotică și deseori irațională (aici există un punct de convergență cu Rusia postsovietică), respectiv o supralicitare a mitului unui Occident binevoitor, care va prelua grijuliu sarcina încadrării noastre pe traiectul ferm al modernității, al democrației și bunăstării, sarcină brutal întreruptă de un regim comunist total străin de realitățile și de cultura politică ale României.
