This little book shows you some of the nativity scenes we have seen and some of the figurines and accessories that you can find in the various Christmas markets and shops in Innsbruck, Austria. Nativity is today a Catholic tradition, separated in many countries from official society as Christianity does no longer have the same central function, although the European values and norms are deeply steeped in Christianity. In Northern European countries the birth of Jesus is no longer the central theme of the Christmas displays. We show you also some alternative displays, usually with animals, that are used instead to make the children, and adults, happy. Mostly they are in shopping windows and displace for a while the display of some of the commercial goods that is the daily function of the windows.
Police officers have used motorcycles since the early 20th century primarily for the enforcement of traffic laws and as escort vehicles Harley-Davidson says Detroit, Michigan as being the first purchaser of police motorcycles in 1908. Evanston, Illinois also started using motor cyles in 1908, and the Portland Police Bureau had a police officer who used his personal motorcycle to patrol the city as early as 1909. The maneuverability of the motorcycle on crowded streets offer advantages that larger, more traditional police vehicles do not have. Motorcycles can access routes unavailable to other motor vehicles, such as narrow streets and footpaths. Police motorcycles are also used in police escorts for parades, funeral processions, motorcades, Olympic torch relays, and other events. We honor all service members on Memorial Day (last Monday of May) and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.
In our family we have an ardent railfan or rail enthusiast. This has led to the present book. Rail enthusiasts are nothing new. An early trainspotter was 14-year-old Fanny Gordon, who in 1861 recorded the names of locomotives passing Westbourne Park station on the Great Western Railway. One of the many activities of rail enthusiasts is to photograph them and part of the fun is to share the photos. Another joy is to sit and read or page through a book or a magazine with pictures and information about trains. This little book was put together at the request of the family railfan in order precisely to sit and look at pictures of German U-Bahn trains. We share the opportunity and hope the reader will enjoy our selection of photos.
Police cars are usually very visible in our society, advertising the important role of police and much loved by children. The role of the police is to enforce the law, to ensure the safety, health, and possessions of citizens, and to prevent crime and civil disorder. Law enforcement is as old as human society and the giving of laws itself. In ancient China, Babylon and Egypt there were special law enforcement bodies. The authors have made a similar book on American police cars and the styles are quite different between the two countries. We hope you will enjoy our selection of photos. Germany is divided into 16 political units. and we show police vehicles from all of them.
Hokusais 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1801 is something completely different. It is his first. And it is one of the first at all. It is different from his famous 36 Views of Mt Fuji, which are sublime artistic expressions distilling a long lifes work. It is different from much of Hokusais other well known work, like his 100 Views of Mt Fuji. But in that series Hokusai still retained a lot of the humor and the caricature found here. It is different from the many other well known 53 Stations of the Tokaido in that Hokusai does not focus on the landscape and the markers that Hiroshige and others showed. Instead Hokusai focus on the events, the interactions between the travellers, the tales that you will share with your friends when you get back home. It was a great and earlier contribution to the Tokaido literature.
Fire engines are some of the most beautiful vehicles of them all! They have developed from horse drawn steam powered pumps to flashy chrome, colors, lights and sirens. Fire trucks are all about public service. They come to help you if your house is on fire or an accident has happened. The understanding is that anything 50 to 100 years old is vintage and anything 100 years old or older is considered an antique and our selection is not always precise. We honor all fire fighters and rescue workers on this 4th of July 2023 and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos.
Napoleon Bonaparte ́s campaign in Russia in from 24 June to abt 5 December 1812 remains one of the greatest military disasters of all times. The hot weather and the forced marches making the soldiers sick reduced Napoleon ́s Grande Armée fom abt 450.000 to only 120.000 a the time he reached Moscow. More famous is the bitter winter during the withdrawal which reduced his fighting force to an est 1.500 and only abt 100.000 made it back. Napoleon didn ́t have the supplies the Russians had. The great battles were few as the Russians avoided most of them and instead they employed scorched earth and guerilla tactics to beat Napoleon. His Russia campaign would lead to the end of his grip on Europa. The campaign is full of great names on both sides and it is impossible to do justice to them all in a small book like this one. Many famous artists have depicted this epic war. We hope the readers will enjoy our selection of art work.
