The Nuclear Fission Process

  • Type: Book
  • -
  • Published: 1991-09-20
  • -
  • Publisher: CRC Press

This text provides a comprehensive review of knowledge regarding nuclear fission from both the purely scientific and practical points of view. Topics discussed include fission barriers, spontaneous fission, neutron-induced fission cross-sections, photon- and electron-induced fission, charged particle induced fission fragment angular momentum and ternary fission. The characteristics of other reaction products are also discussed. Contributed articles from several distinguished nuclear scientists guarantee adequate treatment of some of the specialized research fields included in the text. Intended primarily as an introduction to nuclear fission for graduate students, this book will also provide useful information for nuclear physicists involved with research or teaching.

Seminar on Fission

This conference is the sixth in a series of topical meetings dealing with the nuclear fission process, mainly at low excitation energy. During these meetings, actual topics are discussed by a group of experts. These proceedings give an overview of the topics treated at the conference and permit a rapid overview of the current activities in the field. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Angular Momentum in Fission (1,186 KB). Contents: Angular Momentum in Fission (F GAnnenwein et al.); Proton Induced Fission on Actinide Nuclei at Medium Energy (S Isaev et al.); Fission Cross Sections of Minor Actinides and Application in Transmutation Studies (A Letourneau et al.); Ternary Fission of Cf Isotopes (S Vermote et al.); Scission Neutron Emission in Fission (F-J Hambsch et al.); Fission Fragment Properties from a Microscopic Approach (N Dubray et al.); Development of PSD and ToF + PSD Techniques to Fission Experiments (M Sillanpnn et al.); Fission in Spallation Reactions (J Cugnon et al.); and other papers. Readership: Researchers and graduate students in fundamental nuclear physics, astrophysics and applied nuclear physics."

Following the pioneering discovery of alpha clustering and of molecular resonances, the field of nuclear clustering is presently one of the domains of heavy-ion nuclear physics facing both the greatest challenges and opportunities. After many summer schools and workshops, in particular over the last decade, the community of nuclear molecular physics decided to team up in producing a comprehensive collection of lectures and tutorial reviews covering the field. This first volume, gathering seven extensive lectures, covers the follow topics: * Cluster Radioactivity * Cluster States and Mean Field Theories * Alpha Clustering and Alpha Condensates * Clustering in Neutron-rich Nuclei * Di-neutron Clustering * Collective Clusterization in Nuclei * Giant Nuclear Molecules By promoting new ideas and developments while retaining a pedagogical nature of presentation throughout, these lectures will both serve as a reference and as advanced teaching material for future courses and schools in the fields of nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics.

Seminar On Fission: Pont D'oye Iv

This book constitutes the proceedings of the fourth meeting in a series of topical conferences dealing with the process of nuclear fission, mainly at low excitation energy. Two chapters deal with the characteristics of one of the major fission observables, i.e. the fission fragments. The book also gives due attention to an often-neglected aspect of fission, the so-called ternary fission (i.e. fission accompanied by a charged light particle). Another chapter deals with fission barriers and cross sections and the link with astrophysics. Special attention is also given to recent applications such as accelerator-driven systems and transmutation. The last chapter discusses various interesting aspects of nuclear fission.

Fission And Properties Of Neutron-rich Nuclei - Proceedings Of The Second International Conference

The Second International Conference on Fission and Properties of Neutron-Rich Nuclei continued the emphasis on fission models, fission processes, properties of neutron-rich nuclei and new directions. The responses to the conference were so extensive that 44 talks were presented in individual sessions and 35 more in two afternoons of parallel sessions. New insights and developments were discussed, including experimental and theoretical studies of ternary fission with correlated pairs with emission of a third nucleus such as helium-3, alpha particle, and beryllium-10; the structure of neutron-rich nuclei from spontaneous fission, heavy-ion-induced fission and knock-out reactions; comparisons of deep inelastic reactions and fission for production of neutron-rich nuclei; production of superheavy elements, including the discovery of element 114; experiments with radioactive beams; and proposals for new radioactive ion beam facilities.
