Winner of the Jhalak Prize 'A revelation' Owen Jones 'Afropean seizes the blur of contradictions that have obscured Europe's relationship with blackness and paints it into something new, confident and lyrical' Afua Hirsch A Guardian, New Statesman and BBC History Magazine Best Book of 2019 'Afropean. Here was a space where blackness was taking part in shaping European identity ... A continent of Algerian flea markets, Surinamese shamanism, German Reggae and Moorish castles. Yes, all this was part of Europe too ... With my brown skin and my British passport - still a ticket into mainland Europe at the time of writing - I set out in search of the Afropeans, on a cold October morning.' Afropean...

Recorder From The Beginning: Pupil's Book 1 (2004 Edition) is the full-colour revised edition of John Pitts' best-selling recorder course. The eight extra pages in Book 1 have allowed for some new tunes and rounds, whilst retaining the well-known favourites that have helped to make the scheme such an enduring success. This is the book we all learned from as children and is still, successfully, teaching today's youth how to play the Recorder.

How to Build Stonehenge

Icon of the New Stone Age, sculptural and engineering marvel, symbol of national pride: there is nothing quite like Stonehenge. These great sarsen and bluestone slabs, arranged with simple, graphic genius, attract visitors from across the world. The monument stands silent in the face of the questions its unlikely existence raises: who built it? Why? How? There has been endless speculation about why Stonehenge was built, inspiring theories ranging from the academically credible to the improbable, but far less investigation into how. In the millennia since its creation, pieces of Stonehenge have been knocked over by heavy machinery, found their way to Florida (and back again), and been exposed...

Index to Marriages of Old Rappahannock and Essex Counties, Virginia, 1655-1900

Old Rappahannock County, originally embracing lands lying on both sides of the Rappahannock River, was organized in 1656 and was formerly a part of Lancaster County. In 1692 Old Rappahannock was abolished. The portion lying south of the river was taken to form Essex County, and the area north of the river formed the county of Richmond. Records of Old Rappahannock and Essex counties, on which this work is founded, date from 1655 and are on file at the courthouse in Tappahannock, Essex County. Some marriage bonds of the period 1804 to 1853 were previously copied into the marriage register, instituted as the official catalogue of marriages. In compiling this work, Mrs. Wilkerson used not only the marriage bonds found in the register and the marriage register itself, but also inferential marriage proofs derived from wills, deeds, and court order books. The result is a work of astonishing magnitude; the period covered runs to nearly 250 years and the number of persons namedĪ“ including brides, grooms, parents, and guardiansĪ“ touches 10,000. The text is arranged alphabetically throughout and includes the date of the marriage record and the source.

Describes the history of the Bryson families of North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, starting with Scotch-Irish immigration to the US in the 1700s, through to Davis and Gladys Bryson in the 20th century. Includes extensive photos of original documents, illustrations of life during each generation, discussions of what life was like for each family, and coverage of many different branches of the family. The author writes of the old photographs, letters, clippings, and historic information that he and two of his cousins collected: "I realized that many of these items resided with a single individual and might soon be gone. The idea of a way to make this information available to a wider range of friends and relatives started to form. .... Thus, I felt inspired to write this book." "It was surprising to me to see the large number of our ancestors who in every sense of the word were true pioneers and moved to the very edge of a new frontier. Hence, the title of this book: The Bryson Ancestors--On the Edge of New Frontiers."
