The new demands of this "computer and technology age" have focused international attention on literacy levels, on literacy development and literacy disorders. Governments have launched programs to reduce literacy difficulties and support functional literacy for all. In this context, the needs of individuals with severe speech and physical impairments may seem relatively small, and even unimportant. However, for this group of individuals in particular unlocking the literacy code opens up tremendous opportunities, minimizing the disabling effects of their underlying speech and motor impairments, and supporting participation in society. Ironically however, for a group for whom literacy is such ...

Peptidomimetics are compounds which mimic the biological activity of peptides while offering the advantages of increased bioavailability, biostability, bioefficiency, and bioselectivity against the natural biological target of the parent peptide. Examples of peptidomimetics have been isolated as natural products, synthesized as libraries from novel subunits, and designed on the basis of X-ray crystallographic studies and through an intricate knowledge of the biological mode of action of natural peptides. They offer challenging synthetic targets and are increasingly important medicinal agents and biological probes. As a consequence, peptidomimetics embrace much of what is modern medicinal and organic chemistry. This volume highlights some recent and exciting developments in the area.

First published in 1990. This issue features a dialogue among acknowledged experts concerned with the influence of the work of Milton H. Erickson, M.D. Most readers of the Ericksonian Monographs will be familiar with the far-reaching impact of Erickson's contribution. Erickson's communication-based approach offered, perhaps for the first time, a nonpathological orientation toward treating human suffering

Chemical Induction of Cancer: Structural Bases and Biological Mechanisms Volume IIIA deals with the organic and biochemical principles behind cancer. This volume contains the continuation of Volume IIA, which tackles structure-activity relationships of chemical carcinogens, the effect of chemical reactivity, molecular geometry, and metabolism on carcinogenic activity. Under this is non-conjugated organic compounds. The text is recommended for doctors, organic chemists, and biochemists with an advanced knowledge in biochemistry and organic chemistry and would like to know more the biochemical processes of cancer.

This important text provides a comprehensive survey of homelessness in America: its scope and causes, its diverse populations, and the array of responses at the individual, community, and systems levels. Expert contributors explore the links between trauma and homelessness, the cycle of homelessness and health/mental health problems, and barriers preventing people from accessing services. Case studies of effective programs and practices focus on science-based interventions, broad understanding of client needs, and close coordination between systems and agencies. Finally, specialized chapters discuss issues and experiences common to homeless youth and young adults, including housing instabili...

The purpose of the series on Advances in Antiviral Drug Design is to regularly review the "state of the art" on emerging new developments in the antiviral drug research field, thereby spanning the conceptual design and chemical synthesis of new antiviral compounds, their structure-activity relationship, mechanism and target(s) of action, pharmacological behavior, antiviral activity spectrum, and therapeutic potential for clinical use. Volume 2 begins with a description of the antiviral potential of antisense oligonucleotides by J. Temsamani and S. Agrawal. According to the aims of the anitsense technology, these oligonucleotides should be targeted at specific viral antisense technology, thes...
