Methods recommended by Environment Canada for performing 10-day tests for sediment toxicity, using one or more of the following species of marine or estuarine sediment-burrowing amphipods, are described in this report: Amphiporeia virginiana, Corophium colutator, Eohaustorius estuarius, Eohaustorius washingtonianus, Foxiphalus xiximeus, Leptocheirus pinguis, and Rhepoxynius abronius. The biological endpoint for the test is percent mortality at Day 10. Additional (sublethal) endpoints that measure the percentage of surviving amphipods that emerge from the sediment at Day 10 (i.e., avoidance response) and/or the ability of the amphipods to rebury when transferred to control sediment, can also ...
This book is designed as both a reference and a handbook for the study of fishes. It is a source of methods commonly used to research fish genetics, systematics, anatomy, physiology, developmental biology, toxicology, behavior, and ecology. Standard methods and their theoretical framework are presented for all these fields. Each of the book's 20 chapters also contains a background literature review which, though not exhaustive, allows readers to delve more deeply into subjects that particularly interest them. The main emphasis is on methodology, but the pros and cons of alternative procedures also are treated, as are the uses and misuses of data generated by the techniques.
Deals comprehensively with the bioaccumulation, metabolism, and excretion of toxicants by fish. It addresses the tolerance of fish and fish populations to the stress of environmental alterations, and covers the changes in the biochemical and physiological systems associated with exposure to the common toxicants. Includes strategies for rehabilitating disturbed fisheries.
In recent years, there have been emerging concerns regarding the fate and effects of pulp and paper mill effluents on the environment. Countries throughout the world are focusing attention on the implementation of regulatory and monitoring programs. In response, industry has begun to implement a variety of process and treatment technologies designed to minimize or eliminate the potential impacts. Environmental Fate and Effects of Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents explores the most active and critical current research and experimentation from around the world. This comprehensive overview examines the identity and origin of chemicals in pulp mill effluents, environmental fate of chemicals from pul...
