Written by one of the leaders in the field of solid-phase carbohydrate synthesis, this practical book covers applications ranging from vaccines to cell signaling, synthetic peptides and asymmetric synthesis. Readers will be able to speed up their carbohydrate synthesis using automation and select the right protocol to efficiently plan synthetic pathways. Furthermore, the accompanying CD contains the analytical data for carbohydrate structures for easy access. A definite must-have for organic chemists and biochemists, whether in academia or industry.
The fields of glycochemistry and glycoscience are rich and varied and where much can be learned from Nature. As Nature is not always able to produce carbohydrates in quantities useful for not only in research but also as therapeutic agents, new ways need to be found to optimize the yield. This book presents an overview of the latest developments in the field of carbohydrates, ranging from de-novo approaches via cyclodextrin chemistry to the synthesis of such highly complex glycoconjugates as glycosphingolipids and GPI anchors. The main emphasis remains on the synthetic aspects making the book an excellent source of information for those already involved in carbohydrate chemistry, as well as for those organic chemists who are beginners in this field. Equally of interest to synthetic chemists, as well as medicinal chemists and biochemists.

The book consists of a brief introduction, a foreward provided by professor Danishefsky of Columbia University, and about 14 - 16 chapters, each written by one or two eminent scholars/authors describing their recent research in the area of either domino reactions or intramolecular rearrangements in carbohydrate chemistry. Three or four chapters will be reviews. The domino (cascade, tandem) reactions are always intramolecular. They are usually very fast, clean and offer highly complex structures in a one pot process. Intramolecular rearrangements offer very similar advantages and often lead to highly complex products as well. Although many recently isolated carbohydrates fulfill various sophi...
Medicinal chemistry is both science and art. The science of medicinal chemistry offers mankind one of its best hopes for improving the quality of life. The art of medicinal chemistry continues to challenge its practitioners with the need for both intuition and experience to discover new drugs. Hence sharing the experience of drug research is uniquely beneficial to the field of medicinal chemistry. Drug research requires interdisciplinary team-work at the interface between chemistry, biology and medicine. Therefore, the topic-related series Topics in Medicinal Chemistry covers all relevant aspects of drug research, e.g. pathobiochemistry of diseases, identification and validation of (emerging...
The structural complexity and the synthetic challenges facing glycans have historically hampered efforts to study their multifaceted roles and the application of carbohydrates in drug development. However, in very recent years, new synthetic techniques flanked by the growing knowledge about carbohydrate involvement in physiological and pathological states has spurred renewed interest in the chemistry, biology and therapeutic potentialities of carbohydrates. This book offers an overview of key aspects of carbohydrate biology and chemistry that are fundamental for the design of novel therapeutics. The four-part structure of this book introduces these essential components to life, starting from...
This is the only up-to-date book on the market to focus on the synthesis of these compounds in this particularly suitable way. A team of excellent international authors guarantees high-quality content, covering such topics as monodisperse carbon-rich oligomers, molecular electronic wires, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, nonconjugated small molecules, nanotubes, fullerenes, polyynes, macrocycles, dendrimers, phenylenes and diamondoid structures. The result is a must-have for everyone working in this expanding and interdisciplinary field, including organic and polymer chemists, materials scientists, and chemists working in industry.
Many pathogens and aberrant malignant cells express unique carbohydrates on their surface representing attractive targets for vaccine design. Considerable progress has recently been made in the identification of novel carbohydrate based vaccines and a large number has reached clinical phase studies. The success of several licensed carbohydrate based vaccines against bacterial pathogens such as Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis or Streptococcus pneumoniae demonstrates their great potential. However, the study of anti-carbohydrate antibodies is technically challenging and partly because of low affinities and promiscuous specificity they have not been medically exploited to ...
Facilitate milder, simpler reactions in organic synthesis with this cutting-edge family of building blocks Donor-Accepted Cyclopropanes, or DACs, have attracted a resurgence of interest from organic chemists in recent decades for their role in facilitating various reactions such as cycloadditions, annulations, ring-opening and enantioselective transformations. The structural arrangement of DACs leads to milder, simpler reaction conditions, which have made them indispensable for a range of fundamentally and industrially important processes. Donor-Acceptor Cyclopropanes in Organic Synthesis covers comprehensively the chemistry and applications of this compound class. The result is an invaluabl...
