The analysis of societies' transformations and the influence on the modernization of Central and Eastern Europe economies -- between the pre-modern period and the 20th century -- is a useful tool for understanding contemporary trends in the region, particularly since the debates on economic and social reconstruction find their counterpart in modern state construction projects. The history of this region of Europe -- described as a space of ethnic, religious, and cultural diversity -- is illustrated in this book through the dimension of territory, population, and consumption. Churches and Political Power under Communism in Central and Eastern Europe
This volume is the result of the work of 15 researchers from four former communist countries (Poland, Hungary, Romania, Moldova) who approach the relationship between political power and the churches in Central and Eastern Europe during communism from an interdisciplinary perspective, exploring several directions: biographies (reconstructing the fate of the heroes of anti-communist resistance); institutions (analysing the mechanisms of repression); memorialisation (museum representations of communist repression); and cultural (cinematographic) representations of the communist past. Eight Years in Kosovo
The European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) was launched in 2008 as the largest civilian mission under the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union. The book presents a personal and professional story told by an EULEX-Kosovo International judge. V. S. Kanev is a Bulgarian magistrate who worked (2008 - 2016) for the EU Rule of Law Mission. His Narration is both memoir and documentary. Main part of the storyline is conveyed from a personal angle. The author has shared his diary, and the narrative is focused on the author's personal actions and duties. The book also contains useful information on the reasons leading to deployment of the mission, the mission's mandate as well as political and social difficulties of its day-to-day performance. The description of political conflicts and legal problems may be helpful for studies of modern nation building and rule of law evolution. Stories of the ethnic and religious conflicts portray a post-conflict society struggling to salvage their future from the dooms of the past.

Reformed Majorities in Early Modern Europe
This volume contains the papers of the international RefoRC conference on 'Reformed Majorities and Minorities in Early Modern Europe' as it was organized by the Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek, Emden in cooperation with the Faculty of 'Artes Liberales' of the University of Warsaw. The conference took place April 10-12, 2013 in Emden and was part of the research project 'Doctrina et Tolerantia' directed by the Johannes a Lasco Bibliothek. The contributions in this volume deal with the question how the relation between doctrine and toleration was dealt with in territories with a Reformed majority. Did the refugee-experience of the Reformed make them tolerant or militant? How did official policy relate to everyday practice? Were there different opinions on this issue within the Reformed tradition? The answers to these questions give more insights into the diversity of international Calvinism and the way theory was put into practice.
Dracula
Originally published in French in 2004, Matei Cazacu’s Dracula remains the most authoritative scholarly biography of the Wallachian prince Vlad III the Impaler (1448, 1456-1462, 1476). Its core is an exhaustively researched reconstruction of Dracula’s life and political career, using original sources in more than nine languages. In addition Cazacu traces Dracula’s metamorphosis, at the hands of contemporary propagandists, into variously a bloodthirsty tyrant, and an early modern “great sovereign.” Beyond this Cazacu explores Dracula’s transformation into “the vampire prince” in literature, film and folklore, with surprising new discoveries on Bram Stoker’s sources for his novel. In this first English translation, the text and bibliography are updated, and readers are provided with an appendix of the key sources for Dracula’s life, in fresh and accurate English translations.
Earthly Delights
Earthly Delights brings together a number of substantial and original scholarly studies by international scholars currently working on the history of food in the Ottoman Empire and East-Central Europe. It offers new empirical research, as well as surveys of the state of scholarship in this discipline, with special emphasis on influences, continuities and discontinuities in the culinary cultures of the Ottoman Porte, the Balkans and East-Central Europe between the 17th and 19th centuries. Some contributions address economic aspects of food provision, the development and trans-national circulation of individual dishes, and the role of merchants, diplomats and travellers in the transmission of culinary trends. Others examine the role of food in the construction of national and regional identities in contact zones where local traditions merged or clashed with imperial (Ottoman, Habsburg) and West-European influences.

Print Culture at the Crossroads investigates how the spread of printing shaped a distinctive literary culture in Central Europe during the early modern period. Moving beyond the boundaries of the nation state, twenty-five scholars from over a dozen countries examine the role of the press in a region characterised by its many cultures, languages, religions, and alphabets. Antitrinitarians, Roman and Greek Catholics, Calvinists, Jews, Lutherans, and Orthodox Christians used the press to preserve and support their communities. By examining printing and patronage networks, catalogues, inventories, woodblocks, bindings, and ownership marks, this volume reveals a complicated web of connections linking printers and scholars, Jews and Christians, across Central Europe and beyond.
