Corruption, Anti-Corruption, Vigilance, and State Building from Early to Late Modern Times challenges current historiographical approaches, proposing new interpretations to rethink the relation between corruption and the socio-political and economic transformations since early globalisation. By adopting both transnational and long-term approaches, the book explores the historical dimension of notions such as accountability, transparency, and vigilance in their immediate political, social, and legal contexts. The starting point is to view corruption not as a moral category that emerged in 1789 to delegitimise past, foreign or present state systems, but as a constantly contested concept that must also be historicised in past societies. The collection revisits chronologies and examines different local, regional, and national frames, highlighting that the path to modernity was contested and affected by a variety of unique circumstances, such as revolutions and external political powers. Building on the latest research and offering new methods of inquiry, this book is a compelling resource for academics interested in political history and the history of corruption.
This book analyzes the exchange relations between the colonies of the Iberian Empires, starting from two cities ports, Buenos Aires and Macau in the period 1580-1700. Agents, who were not professional traders such as the members of the Society of Jesus, and the circulation and consumption of Asian goods in the local populations of Buenos Aires and Macau, were analyzed. Both cases of study will show us how these non-state agents- the Jesuits- build their own networks and exchange channels to Chinese goods distribution (i.e silk, porcelain, musk, amber and others) between Asia and Latin American. This book intends to break with the local scheme of Jesuit studies in order to combine the local scale with analysis of inter-regional processes on a continental scale, from a comparative perspective.
International recognition, which lies at the heart of many contemporary political conflicts (Nagorno-Karabakh, Ukraine, ISIS, Palestine, Libya to name a few), has generally been discussed from the point of view of international law and only as concerning modern history. This volume adopts a much broader perspective by tracing the history of recognition back to the ancient world. It approaches the issue of recognition as a political process where law features as only one of several resources at the disposal of the decision makers. The contributors explore the pivotal moments in the history of recognition on both a European and a world scale: the making of the Roman and Carolingian empires, the Peace of Westphalia, Latin American independence, decolonization, and the Cold War. The comparison brings to light the continuities and discontinuities of recognition within and beyond the historical limits of the modern state.
