Daniel Gordon: Houseplants (Signed Edition)

This highly collectible, limited-edition pop-up book is a work of art in itself, rendering Daniel Gordon's sculptural forms into a new layer of materiality and animating them in a pop-up performance. The book consists of six works in pop-up form, some featuring simple plants, others unfolding more elaborate tableaux. Inspired by his interest in the popularity of certain subjects on the internet--houseplants among them--Gordon meticulously cuts up pictures found online to create sculptural and fantastical still lifes. He uses photography not to show reality, but to present a new version of it. The crumpled paper and mix of realistic and unnatural colors render the objects slightly goofy. "Without seams and faults and limitations, my project would be very different," Gordon says. "The seamlessness of the ether is boring to me, but the materialization of that ether, I think, can be very interesting." His pieces are a perfect marriage of digital and analog processes and of high and low artistic references, complicating what is understood as sculpture, photography, painting, and the cutout.

Flying Pictures

"A straight photograph is an exact representation of asegment of space and time circumscribed by the physicaland optical limitations of the medium. So, although therepresentation is exact, because of the circumscription, it isalso a visual fiction. Daniel Gordon explores this boundarywith inventiveness, playfulness, and physical stamina." -Stephen Shore "The artist's short, gravity-killed glides are real, though hisfantastical pictures suggest that computer-based trickerymight have been used." -The Dallas Morning News "On a fundamental level, the art of photography is about themiracle, and how to make the ordinary extraordinary. Thesepictures do that in it's purest form. They capture suspend...

Postcards from Heaven

"Nearly all of us either have had or have heard of an experience in which a soul already departed reaches back to us who have been left behind.... Sometimes, it's no more than a whisper, a familiar smell in the air, or just the feeling of presence as vivid as when the loved one was still alive. These moments are just that...moments, a glimpse behind the veil; not a letter from heaven, but a postcard." (Dan Gordon, Postcards from Heaven) A postcard from heaven is not a revelation from on high -- rather, it's "a whisper, a familiar smell in the air, or just the feeling of presence" of someone who's passed away. It is just enough of a message to imply that what we call life is not ended by what...

Two Billion Cars

Today there are over a billion vehicles in the world, and within twenty years, the number will double, largely a consequence of China's and India's explosive growth. Given that greenhouse gases are already creating havoc with our climate and that violent conflict in unstable oil-rich nations is on the rise, will matters only get worse? Or are there hopeful signs that effective, realistic solutions can be found? Blending a concise history of cars and their impact on the world, leading transportation experts Daniel Sperling and Deborah Gordon explain how we arrived at this state, and what we can do about it. Sperling and Gordon assign blame squarely where it belongs-on the auto-industry, short...

From Technician to CEO

This book is about the journey of Peter Hall, a second-generation pest control operator (PCO) and lawn care professional (LCP) who grew up amid his family business, went off to college to earn a business degree and returned home to work in, and eventually take over, the family business. While growing up, he watched his father work diligently to make a modest living for his family. While attending business school, Peter studied several facets of business, including management, accounting, finance, marketing and operations. His professors used the case method to teach, using successful high-growth, highly profitable companies as subjects. After learning about the strategies employed to expand these model companies, Peter believed he was in a position to move his family's pest and lawn business on a high-growth trajectory. But what tools would he need to make this happen? Do the lessons he learned in the classroom translate to a realistic strategy that can be used to grow a company that will dominate the market, creating above-average income and providing long-term wealth for his family?
