Grounding Metabolism

Grounding Metabolism

Many discussions of architectural metabolism fail to integrate formal, spatial, and material attributes. New Geographies, 6 traces alternative, synthetic routes to design based on better understanding the relation between metabolic models and concepts and the formal, physical, and material specificities of spatial structures across scales.

From small-scale thermal properties to large-scale forestry, territorial, and carbon cycle issues, wood has latent propensities not well addressed in the current discourse on wood construction. Through a range of design research formats-from material testing to in-situ documentation to speculative urban projects- this book articulates and illustrates future architectural and ecological potentials of wood.

Third Coast Atlas

Measuring over 10,000 miles, the Great Lakes coastline, known as the “third coast,” is longer than the Atlantic and Pacific coastlines of the United States combined. It is difficult to overstate the history and future of the region as both a contested and opportunistic site for urbanism. Envisaged as a comprehensive “atlas,” this publication comprises in-depth analysis of the landscapes, hydrology, infrastructure, urban form, and ecologies of the region, delivered through a series of analytical cartographies supported by scholarly and design research from internationally renowned scholars, photographers, and practitioners from the disciplines of architecture, landscape, geography, planning, and ecology. This publication was awarded with a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts.

Over the last 11,700 years, during which human civilization developed, the earth has existed within what geologists refer to as the Holocene Epoch. Now science is telling us that the Holocene Epoch in the geological time scale ended, replaced by the onset of a new, more dangerous Anthropocene Epoch, which began around 1950. The Anthropocene Epoch is characterized by an “anthropogenic rift” in the biological cycles of the Earth System, marking a changed reality in which human activities are now the main geological force impacting the earth as a whole, generating at the same time an existential crisis for the world’s population. What caused this massive shift in the history of the earth?...

Chandler: Circle City Shakedown

"I enjoyed this author's ability to place the reader at the scene and the character seems to be believable. I enjoyed good winning out over evil and there was sad realities involved in his type of work to make it realistic." - Bradley A. Smith, Amazon reviews "A new P.I. series from Bill Craig, this one set in Indy ... I'm excited. It's like a cool breeze waiting through a hot strip club as Chandler meets the challenge to find a missing miss." - Byron Rupert McCafferty, Online Critics Corner Phillip Chandler used to be Chicago cop, but after a run in with corrupt officials left him jobless and disgusted, he moved south to Indianapolis, Indiana and opened up shop as a private eye. While he has an office in a seedy part of Downtown Indy, Chandler spends a good deal of his time between Babes and The Slippery Noodle. So it comes as no surprise when a stripper working under the name of Mary Blue showed up wanting Chandler to locate her friend, Rita Clark, AKA "Red Rita" that vanished after working a "party" in Carmel a couple of nights before. Chandler agrees to look into it, and soon discovers that corruption is everywhere and innocence lost is never again found...

Socioeconomic Evaluation of Megaprojects

The governance and evaluation of ‘megaprojects’ – that is, large-scale, complex, high-stakes infrastructure projects usually commissioned by governments and delivered through partnerships between public and private organisations – is receiving increased attention. However, megaproject evaluation has hitherto largely adopted a linear-rationalist perspective to explain the frequent failure of such projects to meet the ‘iron triangle’ of performance criteria: delivering on time, within budget, and according to specifications. This approach recommends greater control and accountability to remedy megaproject ‘pathologies’. Drawing on empirical examples mainly from the transport se...

Project Risks

Those tasked with the planning and construction of infrastructure and development operations face an increasingly uncertain context in which they must address risks across a number of different fields. These range from the environmental and archaeological to the social, political and financial. As a consequence, the formal and informal practices of stakeholders often incorporate projections of risk and opportunity. Project Risks analyzes this paradigm shift. It reviews the origin and nature of these uncertainties, and the practices implemented by the actors to mitigate or take advantage of them. Paradoxically, these practices generate new risks and power relations that are not compatible with the collaborative planning model. These paradoxes force the rethinking of practices such as project territorialization, risk taking in planning and the responsibility of actors, as well as the societal and political choices that must be made between the realization of projects and the protection of the environment.
