The content of this volume reflects theoretical and practical discussions on cultural issues influenced by increased adoption of information and communication technologies. The penetration of new forms of communication, such as online social networking, internet video-casting, and massive online multiplayer gaming; the experience and exploration of virtual worlds; and the massive adoption of ever-emergent ICT technologies; are all developments in desperate need of serious examination. It is not surprising that these new realities, and the questions and issues to which they give rise, have drawn increasing attention from academics. Those engaging these issues do so from a wide range of academ...

This volume was first published by Inter-Disciplinary Press in 2011. Magic and the Supernatural have become de rigeur in popular culture to an extent that it is well-nigh inconceivable to imagine our quotidian lives without them. It is most probably the notion of danger and prohibition that incites our curiosity for these conceptions: they can be used for the Good, but out of control they trigger Evil. Oftentimes it is claimed that something is only magical until it can be explained in rational terms and that therefore we remain in a state of childish ignorance if believing in it. We are made to think that it is more conducive to focus on what happens in the here and now than to worry about ...

Cybercultures: Mediations of Community, Culture, Politics, is a collection of essays that critically examine the role that digital media and online cultures play in the rearticulation of contemporary societies, cultures and polities. This volume interrogates the nature and effects of the existence of cybercultures in the world of Web 2.0, new media and media convergence, and mobile digital networks. It does so by examining the effect of cybercultures upon the contemporary articulation of phenomena as diverse as bodily experience, memory, the imagination, history, political participation, the nature of community, artistic creativity, and the instability of rhetoric, language and meaning.

The Right to Memory

The field of memory studies has typically focused on everyday memory and commemoration practices through which we construct meaning and identities. The Right to Memory looks beyond these everyday practices, focusing instead on how memory relates to human rights and socio-legal constructs in order to legitimize and protect groups and individuals. With case studies including Polish Holocaust Law, the Indian origins of Amartya Sen's capability theory approach, and the right to memory through digital technologies in Brazilian and British museums, this collected volume seeks to establish the right to memory as a foundational topic in memory studies.

Traffic: Media as Infrastructures and Cultural Practices presents a collection of texts by distinguished international media and cultural scholars that addresses fundamental relationships between the logistic, symbolic, and infrastructural dimensions of media. The volume discusses the role of traffic and infrastructures within the history of media theory as well as in a broader cultural context: Traffic is shown to constitute an important epistemological and technical principle, a paradigm for exchanges and circulations between discoursive and non-discoursive cultural practices. This opens an encompassing perspective of media ecology, and at the same time illuminates the formative power of traffic as structuring time and space: material and informational traffic creates, maintains, and undermines power, configures meaning, and facilitates appropriation and resistance.
