Edgar Frances Poree Jr., a lifelong resident of Louisiana, looks back at his struggles, disappointments, and successes in this memoir that examines the African American experience in the South. As a Black male, he dealt with deeply rooted prejudices, religious discrimination, and conflict with older members of the Black community. He constantly faced inner turmoil, but he remained steadfast in his focus to achieve his goals and navigate the transition from segregation to integration. Poree learned to be resourceful early, convincing the owner of a nearby grocery store to give him a job cleaning the store and organizing the shelves. He went on to start his own business polishing hardwood floors while in the seventh grade. His love for music eventually helped him earn a scholarship at Xavier University in New Orleans, and from there he was on his way. From his teaching career to his successes as a business executive and civic leader, Poree shares his memories of real people, real places, and real divisions. His hope is that youll be emboldened, encouraged and inspired to achieve your own dreams.

These reflections on school and schooling come from the crucible of practice in the real world of K–12 education. Written by a school leader for his school, these essays have a timeless and universal appeal for parents, grandparents, educators, school leaders, and all who care about the formation of the next generation. Chip Denton, founding head of Trinity School in Durham, North Carolina, applies multiple lenses—theological, pedagogical, and practical—to reflect on the ways a school’s mission drives a multitude of mindsets, traditions, and habits in a community of learners. Schools are places where words matter, and in this volume you can see a school leader working to match word and deed in the life of a school. Collected from Denton’s regular Head Lines letters to the Trinity School community over the last decade (2015–2024), these reflections engage the complexities and tensions of excellence in education. The letters can be read individually, but together they tell how one school’s story illustrates Nietzsche’s saying that one who has a why can manage with any how.

"An analysis of the costs and effects of immigration and immigration policy, both on American life and on new Americans. This book examines the costs and ends of America's interior enforcement: the policies and agencies, including ICE, aimed at removing immigrants already living in the country. Economist Tara Watson and journalist Kalee Thompson pair analysis with personal stories from immigrants and their families to assess immigration's effects on every aspect of American life, from the labor force to social welfare programs to tax revenue. What emerges is a critical examination of what non-native Americans bring to the country, including immigration's tendency to elevate the wages and skills of those who are native-born. The authors dissect the shock-and-awe policies that make up a broken, often cruel system, while illuminating the lives caught in the chaos"--Publisher's description.
