Asia-Africa Development Divergence

Why have South-East Asian countries like Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam been so successful in reducing levels of absolute poverty, while in African countries like Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania, despite recent economic growth, most people are still almost as poor as they were half a century ago? This book presents a simple, radical explanation for the great divergence in development performance between Asia and Africa: the absence in most parts of Africa, and the presence in Asia, of serious developmental intent on the part of national political leaders.

In Environment, Trade and Society in Southeast Asia: A Longue Durée Perspective, eleven historians bring their knowledge and insights to bear on the long Braudelian sweep of Southeast Asian history. In doing so they seek both to debunk simplistic assumptions about fragile traditions and transformational modernities, and to identify real repeating patterns in Southeast Asia's past: clientelistic political structures, periodic tectonic and climatic disasters, ethnic occupational specializations, long cycles of economic globalization and deglobalization. Their contributions range across many centuries: from the Austronesian expansion to the Aceh tsunami, and from the Sanskrit cosmopolis to the Asian financial crisis. The book is inspired by, and dedicated to, Peter Boomgaard, a scholar whose work has embodied the Braudelian spirit in Southeast Asian historiography. This title is available online in its entirety in Open Access.

By according equal status to aesthetic outcomes and artistic integrity, the author offers a new and holistic approach to claywork. Combining historical geography with historical demography, and conceived as a study in environmental history, this book examines the long-term relationship between population, economy and environment in the northern half of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Using a rich variety of Dutch historical sources, including VOC and missionary archives, it attempts to reconstruct and analyse patterns of demographic, economic and landscape change throughout this large and ecologically diverse region over a period of almost three and a half centuries. Particular attention is given to the articulation between demographic and economic growth, to levels and determinants of reproductive fertility, to changing disease environments, and to the question of agricultural sustainability and its preconditions. The results call into question some common views regarding the reasons for low population growth, and the relationship between population density and landscape change, in the Southeast Asian past.

Credit and Debt in Indonesia, 860-1930

Credit and debt are practical concerns of all times and places. They are also increasingly important topics in economic history and the social sciences, from Marcel Mauss and the anthropology of the gift to the urgent quest for understanding of today's global credit crunch. This volume brings together eight essays on credit and debt in the history of Indonesia, where for centuries debt and debt bondage played central roles in the organization of society, and where efforts to combat 'usury' and free peasants from indebtedness were central to the ethical and nationalist movements of the late colonial period. Topics range from the inscriptions of ninth-century Java to the first global financial...

Too much of what has so far passed for the 'historical background' to Indonesia's environmental problems has consisted of little more than thinly disguised backward projections of modern trends. The writers in this volume report on their own pioneer journeys into the paper landscapes of the colonial literature and archives in search of the real environmental history of Indonesia.

For many people, especially occasional visitors or those who have never visited, the name Henley-on-Thames conjures up images of Henley Royal Regatta, of relaxed afternoons by the Thames, of large houses with spacious lawns. For its residents, and residents of the surrounding villages, the dominant images are more likely to be of traffic jams, narrow pavements, supermarkets and late-night brawls. As David Whitehead reveals in Henley-on-Thames: A History, both views are, of course, far from complete and tend to hide the reality of a working and commuter town with a character that reflects the impact of several centuries of history.

The Haw

The Golden Triangle region where Burma, Thailand, Laos and China meet has long been a lawless region, home to wandering tribes, drug warloads, arms dealers, and plain old-fashioned bandits. Yet within this widely romanticized region one group, the Yunnanese Chinese or Haw', have established themselves as cultural mediators and merchants par excellance, penetrating the area with their armed mule caravans. For centuries past, and down to the present day, the Haw have been the unrivaled masters of the Golden Triangle. This volume is a comprehensive survey of the Haw life and customs, its past, present and future.
