Sleep problems are ubiquitous in the modern world, significantly impacting on quality of life, mental health, and performance at work and at home. More significantly, sleep problems accompany almost every mental health condition and are a significant driver in the development and maintenance of poor mental health. This book describes the current state of knowledge on the science of sleep, covering the various forms of insomnia and parasomnia that abound, before discussing the variety of assessment and treatment options available to the healthcare practitioner. Further discussion of psychological and behavioural interventions is made with particular reference to a new, second-generation Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia, how this is an effective treatment modality, and how it can be applied with clients presenting with more complex physical and mental health conditions. The final chapter presents the range of theories as to the purpose and function of dreams and dreaming, and how 'dream-work' has been applied in the therapeutic setting.

A Careful Revolution

‘I am 29 years old. I was born just before the Kyoto Protocol was signed, and since then global mean temperatures have risen by an estimated 0.2°C per decade . . . in my lifetime I am likely to experience a world that is 2°C warmer, perhaps as much as 4°C, and has more droughts, fires and floods.’ Sylvia Nissen Climate crisis is upon us. By choice or necessity, New Zealand will transition to a low-emissions future. But can this revolution be careful? Can it be attentive to the disruptions it inevitably creates? Or will carefulness simply delay and dilute the changes that future people require of us? This timely collection brings together eleven authors to explore the politics and practicalities of the low-emissions transition, touching on issues of justice, tikanga, trade-offs, finance, futurism, adaptation, and more.

The Royal Naval Commandos had one of the most dangerous and the most important tasks of any in World War II - they were first on to the invasion beaches and they were the last to leave. Formed in 1941 as the Royal Naval Beach Parties, many lost their lives in the Dieppe raid. After Dieppe they became fully fledged fighting commandos with their legendary Fairbairn Sykes commando knives, organized into units from a commando through to the all Canadian W Commando. Under their officers who were designated as Beachmasters, the Royal Naval Commandos led the way in on the beaches as part of the allied landings in Madagascar, Dieppe, North Africa, Pantelleria, Sicily, Salerno, the Volturno River, Anzio, Arakan, D-Day, Elba, Walcheren and Commachio. Their work on the beaches was crucial to the success of the allied invasions. After the war the Royal Naval Commandos were disbanded and forgotten and their wartime role was given to the Royal Marines. The personal accounts of Royal Naval Commandos contained in this book tell the story of a remarkable but little-known group of men, ensuring that their legacy will not be forgotten.
