Policy-making and Policy Learning in 14-19 Education

In recent years 14-19 education has been the subject of numerous reviews, innovations and policy changes. What can be learnt from this experience and do current policies incorporate this learning? In this book, leading experts on 14-19 education and training explore the concept of policy-learning and examine recent policies and policy-making in England and Scotland. They focus on three main types of policy-learning: learning from the experience of earlier policies, learning from local innovations and learning from comparisons with other countries, including "home international" comparisons within the uk. They suggest that in order to meet current challenges in 14-19 education, it is not only...

British secondary education has changed in major ways since 1945. This book examines some consequences and implications of both change and stability, drawing on a unique series of national surveys of school leavers in Scotland. The authors provide an empirical and theoretical account of central problems of contemporary schooling. Their analysis covers: certification, curriculum and selection; the effects of educational expansion; trends in educational inequality; the impact of comprehensive reorganisation; truancy and alienation from schooling; the explanation of differences in performance between schools and the implications for the public accountability of schools. From these analyses the authors develop a critique of the ‘theory’ of the education system that underpinned expansion. They examine this theory’s logical and empirical status as ‘myth’ and elaborate how the political system and social science might jointly overcome some of the methodological difficulties that beset social and educational research.

The aim is to encourage reflection on the essential differences and the binding similarities of the systems which make up educational provision in the United Kingdom.

14-19 Education

'AT LAST, A BOOK ABOUT THIS MOST VEXED PART OF THE CURRICULUM WHICH IS OBJECTIVE, HONEST AND RESEARCH-BASED. These two well-established authors have done what even supposedly neutral writers of official reports have been unable to do and this is because they emerge as having only one 'axe to grind', namely what is best for the students and the country. Showing only too clearly the confusions and competitions which have bedevilled provision for this age group, THE AUTHORS' VIEWS ARE CONVINCING AND CREDIBLE PARTLY BECAUSE-UNUSUALLY- THEY COME FROM NEITHER A 'PRO-SCHOOL' OR A 'PRO-COLLEGE' LOBBY.( Read , for example, the chapter on leadership to see how leaders in the two sectors-but providing ...
