Philosophical Essays on Ugo Nespolo's Art and Cinema
An indefatigable experimenter with new creative possibilities. With his work, the Italian artist Ugo Nespolo (1941-) has given shape to a poetics that stands out in the contemporary art scene by existing on the border between avant-garde and pop. He has experimented in almost every field of art, in and out of different screens, from paintings to installations and cinema. This book is a collection of philosophical essays that analyse Nespolo’s poetics from different theoretical perspectives, focused in particular on his artworks and films. The book consists of three sections. The first includes essays dedicated to Nespolo’s works that fall within the visual arts. The second presents contributions that investigate his cinema and some of his films. The third section concludes the book with two interviews conducted at different stages of Nespolo’s career, which tackle some of the key themes of his poetics, offering a direct insight into his theoretical reflection.
Paolozzi and Wittgenstein
This impressive edited collection investigates the relationship between British Pop Art pioneer Eduardo Paolozzi and the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. At this time, when Paolozzi’s oeuvre is in the process of being rediscovered, his long-time fascination with Wittgenstein requires thorough exploration, as it discloses a deeper understanding of his artistic production, further helping to reassess the philosopher’s actual impact on visual arts and its theory in the second half of the 20th century. With 13 diverse and comprehensive chapters, bringing together philosophers and art historians, this volume aims at retracing and pondering the influence of Wittgenstein on the idea of art in Paolozzi, thus giving an unprecedented insight into Wittgenstein’s philosophy as employed by contemporary artists.
Abstraction Matters
From the archaic funerary and sacred stones to the most recent three-dimensional objects, sculpture has been determined by a dualistic tension between the urge for imitation of natural forms (mimesis) and the desire to freely shape autonomous configurations (abstraction). Within such a complex history, the second half of the 20th century has been a particularly intense period. Besides their abstract works, many sculptors developed an extraordinarily rich theoretical discourse. This collection of essays presents some of the most eminent protagonists of this crucial historical moment by focusing on the artists’ “own words”. In their analysis, the contributors have followed three key-notions – “Sensation”, “Idea”, and “Language” – that fruitfully collect different artists under a common conceptual arch and show the aesthetic relevance of abstraction in sculpture. This book addresses high-level undergraduate and graduate students, as well as the scholarly community in the fields of aesthetics and art criticism, art history and art theory, visual, cultural and media studies.

This issue of the 'philosophy of the city' includes articles by scholars on a range of human sciences, from media theory to aesthetics and architectural theory. Philosophy, social ontology, cultural anthropology, aesthetics, digital hermeneutics, media theory, cognitive science: these are just some of the disciplines that contribute to the philosophy of the city. This variety of approaches doesn't necessarily result in a chaotic mix. Many of the included forms of discourse belong to the same episteme, which means there are many connections and overlaps. This is true both in the literatures of reference and in the ways of answering the question of what 'the city' is. Secondly, the texts don't focus on the city itself, but on those who live in, design, imagine and think about it. Thirdly, because these texts create a place where different ideas can live together. This is like a city, where ideas change, are built on and then rebuilt. This is what Wittgenstein wrote about in his Philosophical Investigations.

Most known for his epic film series Cremaster Cycle (1994-2002) and Drawing Restraint (2005), a feature film made with his partner, Björk, Barney's technically and conceptually fastidious work conflates various personal and universal mythologies into narratives that are famously difficult to unravel. This volume compiles work from Barney's solo exhibitions at Turin's Fondazione Merz and National Museum of Cinema, as well as coverage of the International Festival of Philosophy of Contemporary Art, a collaboration between the Fondazione Merz and the University of Turin for which Barney was featured in conversation with Richard Flood and Arthur C. Danto.
