A practical introduction to the techniques of contemporary carpet design Walking on Art explores contemporary carpet design from a practitioner’s viewpoint, describing through techniques and illustrations Deirdre Dyson’s fourteen-year journey from figurative painter to carpet designer. A foreword by Professor Sir Christopher Frayling contextualizes Dyson’s award-winning work within discussions about art and design, and then Dyson herself reflects on her long experience of designing exquisite luxury carpets. The chapter “Techniques" introduces the traditional methods that create these carpets including hand knotting, hand tufting, and carving, and how these conventions can be manipulated to create stunning effects. “Process" then explores the steps—from inspiration to making—that lie behind any design. These chapters are followed by colorful illustrations of Dyson’s extensive collections. Here are fanciful butterfly motifs alongside geometric patterns and floral designs, brought together in one stunning collection.
Dyson has become a byword for high performing products, technology, design and invention. Now, James Dyson, the inventor and entrepreneur who made it all happen, tells his remarkable and inspirational story in Invention: A Life. Famously, over a four-year period, James Dyson made 5127 prototypes of the cyclonic vacuum cleaner that would transform the way houses are cleaned around the world. In devoting all his resources to iteratively developing the technology, he risked it all, but out ofmany failures and setbacks came hard-fought success. His products - including vacuum cleaners, hair dryers and hair stylers, and fans and purifiers - are not only revolutionary technologies, but design clas...
Paper is readily available and inexpensive in comparison to other sculptural media, and can be manipulated with a set of simple tools. It is a tactile medium, which can be formed into three-dimensional shapes quickly and immediately through folding and cutting. This hands-on element is something I feel is important -- it allows the artist to engage immediately with the material, resulting in something physical and tangible. It is, perhaps, these factors that make it so appealing, not only as a tool to apply in different fields, such as model making for architecture, but as an activity for its own sake. A section of this book is dedicated to a selection of the techniques I use in the creation of my work, and which I demonstrate in my workshops. My aim is to show the basic principles of form-making in paper, which can then be expanded on and explored as the reader wishes. Also included are my sources of inspiration and details of my working practice, which shows the evolution of an initial idea into a final artwork. I hope this book offers an insight into my work, while offering inspiration to those who wish to explore the creative potential of paper.

Written by one of the UK's leading lighting designers on both commercial and residential projects, it features a variety of real-world projects – large and small, old and new, interior and exterior, UK and global.
Hal Colebatch's new book, AUSTRALIA'S SECRET WAR, tells the shocking, true, but until now largely suppressed and hidden story of the war waged from 1939 to 1945 by a number of key Australian trade unions against their own society and against the men and women of their own country's fighting forces at the time of its gravest peril. His conclusions are based on a broad range of sources, from letters and first-person interviews between the author and ex-servicemen to official and unofficial documents from the archives of World War II. Between 1939 and 1945 virtually every major Australian warship, including at different times its entire force of cruisers, was targeted by strikes, go-slows and sabotage. Australian soldiers operating in New Guinea and the Pacific Islands went without food, radio equipment and munitions, and Australian warships sailed to and from combat zones without ammunition, because of strikes at home. Planned rescue missions for Australian prisoners-of-war in Borneo were abandoned because wharf strikes left rescuers without heavy weapons. Officers had to restrain Australian and American troops from killing striking trade unionists.
