This is a draft of one ot two companion dictionaries for the Dena'ina language that are now in preparation. Volume 1 is organized into subject areas such as "Birds", "Food", "Clothing", or "Shelter". Most words can be located easily by thinking about the subject area a word most naturally belongs to. This draft is tenetatively scheduled for publication in 1995. Vol. 2, a larger Integrated Morpheme Dictionary of Dena'ina will be completed sometime later. This draft is being circulated at this time in Dena'ina communities and to colleagues so that further refinements and additions can be made. Note an introduction and several chapters are not included in this draft.-- from the preface.

Dena'ina Topical Dictionary

This is a dictionary of the Dena'ina Athabascan language of Cook Inlet Basin and the Southern Alaska Range. Vocabulary lists arranged by topic provide a panoramic view of the central cultural and ecological concepts of the Dena'ina. In terms of breadth of subjects, technical specificity, dialect coverage, and illustrations, this is the most refined topical lexicon in existence for an Alaska Native language and for any language in the Athabascan family. More than one hundred Dena'ina speakers contributed words, and many chapters were reviewed by experts in natural history and ethnology. This work positions Dena'ina topical materials at the intersection of ethnology and linguistics.

"The work contained herein consists of two research papers that emerged from a single qualitative study of goals and ideologies of adult learners of Dena'ina Athabascan in attendance at the 2005 Dena'ina Language Institute. The study draws upon 19 semi-structured, in-depth interviews that were collected and analyzed in order to increase community control over the program and to assist in the development of future programming offered by the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The first research paper suggests that goals of attendees clustered into four categories: fluency, literacy, cultural knowledge, and community building. More important than these four stated goals were the ways in which thes...
