The Short Story after Apartheid
The Short Story after Apartheid offers the first major study of the anglophone short story in South Africa since apartheid’s end. By focusing on the short story this book complicates models of South African literature dominated by the novel and contributes to a much-needed generic and formalist turn in postcolonial studies. Literary texts are sites of productive struggle between formal and extra-formal concerns, and these brief, fragmentary, elliptical, formally innovative stories offer perspectives that reframe or revise important concerns of post-apartheid literature: the aesthetics of engaged writing, the politics of the past, class and race, the legacies of violence, and the struggle over the land. Through an analysis of key texts from the period by Nadine Gordimer, Ivan Vladislavić, Zoë Wicomb, Phaswane Mpe, and Henrietta Rose-Innes, this book assesses the place of the short story in post-apartheid writing and develops a fuller model of how artworks allow and disallow forms of social thought.

An Introduction to the Literature of eSwatini
This book is the first comprehensive introduction to the literature of eSwatini. It details a literary trajectory that begins with renditions of the country by early travelers and settlers and follows with the emergence of a national literature that is marked by early oral influences and molded by unique sociopolitical interests. Along the way, the author considers how contemporary writing by visitors, expatriates, and journalists have salvaged and recycled earlier images and attitudes through a series of representational and rhetorical practices. In particular, the lingering influence of colonial discourse is explored in the context of the nation’s pivotal incwala ritual. Methods for the Study of Literature as Cultural Memory
In this volume collaborators from different universities all over the world explore a wide variety of methods for the study of literature as cultural memory. In literature, the past may be (re)constructed in various ways and in very diverse forms. This immediately raises the question as to how one can describe and inventory the various discourses and metadiscourses of historical representation. In what sense can the rhetoric of literary historiography itself contribute to literature's function as cultural memory? Which methods of analysis are most appropriate for describing specific text types or genres as cultural memory? What have been the pragmatic uses and the ethical merits of the stability and continuity that literature has often provided for European, American, Asian and African cultures?
