The International Symposium on Artificial Heart and Assist Devices has been held three times, first in 1985, then in 1987 and 1990. It is my great pleasure to present Artificial Heart 3 (Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium on Artificial Heart and Assist Devices). The third symposium was held in Tokyo on February 16 and 17, 1990. Our original intention was to invite all the principal investigators from the major artificial heart research laboratories in the world, in the first three symposia. The numbers of investigators in the fields of the artificial heart, ventricular assist systems, and biomaterials, invited for the symposia, totalled 7 in 1985, 8 in 1987, and 13 in 1990. The p...

Assisted Circulation 3 is an authoritative review of the progress which has been achieved in the last 5 years since the appearance of Assisted Circulation 2 in 1984. The present book highlights the work of well-known experts on - new indications for assisted circulation, - cardiac assist devices as bridges toward transplantation, - temporary mechanical heart support, - results of long term studies into problems of tissue overgrowth, infection, and physiological regulation of cardiac devices, and - new results on cardiac transplantation and the new immunsuppresive regima. Assisted Circulation 3 is the latest product of an ongoing effort by the editors to keep readers abreast of recent advances in the field on a regular basis.
This book presents a comprehensive survey of acute heart failure. A series of experts recognized worldwide discuss specific topics so that, together, a wide spectrum of experimental and clinical investigations are covered. Pathophysiologic, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects are included. The present volume will help clinicians deal with the important problem of acute heart failure. It will help provide an up-to-date reference for those involved in cardiology, internal medicine, pediatrics, anesthesia, intensive care and emergency medicine.
This volume presents the first full list of names of the 54 genera and 1175 species that make up Sapotaceae. Sapotaceae (the argan, chicle or gutta-percha family) are found throughout most of the wetter tropics and subtropics, and are ofconsiderable direct economic importance as sources of fine timber, latex, fruit, vegetable oil and amenity trees.
