Beth Lipman: ReGift shares some of the unwritten histories that artist Beth Lipman discovered while conducting research in the archives of the Toledo Museum of Art. Her exploration inspired a room-sized recreation in wood, glass, and metal of a scene from a bookplate used by the museum's founders, Edward Drummond Libbey and Florence Scott Libbey. Lipman was particularly keen to examine Florence's life, and in conversation with curator Diane C. Wright and archivist Julie A. McMaster, she discusses the project's origins in her own artistic practice and its relationship to shifting understandings of institutions and their publics. An essay by Wright and McMaster draws on additional archival materials to fill in some of the gaps in our knowledge of Florence Scott Libbey's life.

The accompanying catalogue for Ohio-based artist Matt Wedel’s first major museum exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art, this generously illustrated book explores the astonishing energy that Wedel has brought to the field of contemporary ceramic sculpture. A prolific maker, he regularly pivots between stoneware, earthenware, and porcelain, exploring the expressiveness of material and color. Matt Wedel: Phenomenal Debris investigates the development and cross-pollination of figuration and landscape in Wedel’s ceramic sculptures, as well as his own psychology and how it transforms both his work and the way he perceives his role as artist, father, and global citizen.

American Glass

"Glass can be decorative or utilitarian, and its forms often reflect technological innovations and social change. Drawing on an insightful selection from the Yale University Art Gallery and other collections at Yale, American Glass illuminates the vital and often intimate roles that glass has played in the nation's art and culture. Spectacularly illustrated, the publication showcases eighteenth-century mold-blown vessels, nineteenth-century pressed glass, innovative studio work, and luminous stained-glass windows by John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany, the latter reproduced as a lush gatefold. These are considered alongside beguiling objects that broaden our expectations of glass and speak to the centrality of the medium in American life, including one of the oldest complex microscopes in the United States, an early Edison light bulb, glass-plate photography, jewelry, and more. With an essay on the history of collecting American glass and discussions of each object that present new scholarship, this engaging book tells the long and rich history of glass in America--from prehistoric minerals to contemporary sculptures"--Dust jacket front flap.
