Medicine Ways

In Native cultures, health is often expressed as a balance between body, mind, and spirit or soul. At a philosophical level, physical wellness is related to cultural, political, and economic well-being. This is a philosophy that is frequently ignored, however, in theoretical perspectives and applied programs that attempt to address Native American health problems. This collection of essays examines the ways people from many indigenous communities think about and practice health care within historical and sociocultural contexts. Chapters explore solutions to the prevalence of medically identified diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, as well as Native-identified problems, such as forced evacuation, assimilation, and poverty. In this book, we incorporate wisdom from Zoroastrianism on the angels of transformation and the Archangel of the Earth; from Ibn 'Arabi on the barzakh (the interface between manifestation and subtle reality), creative imagination, and the human-divine relationship; from Hazrat Inayat Khan, Pir Vilayat, and Pir Zia on contemporary Sufi teachings which state that every desire begins with a divine impulse and that the purpose of spirituality is awakening of divinity in life; as well as from realizations from the authors' meditations, inspirations, and spiritual dialogues which form the basis of what they call the Gabrielite Work. Everyone has the potential to awaken to their existence in multiple realms of reality, and to contribute in a unique way from the fullness of their being to the never ending human-divine co-creative process.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reported more than 7 million deaths from cancer-- 2.5 percent of all deaths--in 2005. Each year there are approximately 11 million new cases, and WHO expects that the number will double by 2020. Although the disease is not uncommon in rich nations, 70 percent of cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income regions and countries. The growing frequency of the disease reinforces its significance as a metaphor for lack of control and degeneration and as a signifier of difference, something that is part of one's body and world and yet completely unacceptable. In this book, anthropologists examine the lived experiences of individuals confronting cancer and reveal the social context in which prevention and treatment may succeed or fail.
