This book contains contributions of the 7th Dresden Polymer Discussion held in Mei?en near Dresden from April 19 to 22, 1999. The conference was dedicated to the field 'Characterization of polymer sorption phenomena: From solution to the surface'. Research in the area of modification and characterization of surfaces and interfaces of solids has been booming in the last few years, due to its enormous importance and potential for the development of novel technologies in materials research and engineering. Therefore the 7th Dresden Polymer Discussion, held from April 19 to 22, 1999, was dedicated to the field 'Characterization of polymer sorption phenomena: from solution to the surface'. The publication of the proceedings in this book may contribute to further progress in this field.
This volume from the successful Macromolecular Symposia series presents the contributions from the IUPAC-sponsored International Symposium on "Radical Polymerization: Kinetics and Mechanism", held in Il Ciocco, Italy, in September, 2006. This was the fourth within the series of so-called SML conferences, which are the major scientific forum for addressing kinetic and mechanistic aspects of free-radical polymerization and controlled radical polymerization. SML IV again marked an important step forward toward the better understanding of the kinetics and mechanism of radical polymerization, which is extremely relevant for both conventional and controlled radical polymerization and for people in academia as well as in industry. This book addresses the recent developments in the investigation and manipulation of liquids at the nanoscale. This new field has shown important breakthroughs on the basic understanding of physical mechanisms involving liquid interfaces, which led to applications in nanopatterning. This book has emerged out of our long-time research interests on the topic of latex film formation. Over the years we have built up a repertoire of slides used in conference presentations, short courses and tutorials on the topic. The story presented in this book has thereby taken shape as it has been told and re-told to a mix of academic and industrial audiences. The book presents a wide body of work accumulated by the polymer colloids community over the past five decades, but the selection of examples has been flavoured by our particular experimental interests and development of mathematical models. We intend the book to be a starting point for academic and industrial scientists beginning research on latex film formation. The emphasis is on fundam- tal mechanisms, however, and not on applications nor on specific effects of formu- tions. We hope that the book consolidates the understanding that has been achieved to-date in the literature in a more comprehensive way than is possible in a review article. We trust that the reader will appreciate the fascination of the topic.
