After the successful conclusion of the Joint Meeting of IUFRO’s 7.03.05 & 7.03.10 working parties and given the exciting and novel studies that have been presented in the framework of this meeting, we decided to present some of these studies in the current Special Issue of Forests. To make this issue more appealing and interesting to everyone in the field of Forest Protection, studies that cover a wide range of topics were selected, ranging from ecology and phylogeography to forest management and protection. More importantly, as these studies refer to pests and pathogens from different parts of the world, it is expected that the knowledge gained can be further used in the protection of natural environment worldwide.

Pines and Their Mixed Forest Ecosystems in the Mediterranean Basin

Almost 20 years after the first MEDPINE book "Ecology, biogeography and management of Pinus halepensis and P. brutia forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean basin "(Ne'eman and Trabaud, 2000) was published, this new book presents up-to-date and state of the art information, covering a wide range of topics concerning Mediterranean pine trees growing in native and planted forests, their ecosystems and management. This will be an essential source of scientific information for learning, exploring planning and managing mediterranean pine and mixed forests. We focus on: genetics, adaptation, distribution and evolution; ecophysiology and drought resistance; pine and mixed forest ecosystems; forest d...

Processionary Moths and Climate Change : An Update

Because of its peculiar biology, its negative impacts on forestry, and its urticating larvae affecting human and animal health, pine processionary moth has largely been studied in many European countries during the last century. However, knowledge remained scattered and no synthesis has ever been published. Since the IPCC retained the moth as one of the two insect indicators of climate change because of its expansion with warming up, filling this gap became increasingly important. Led by INRA, this book associates 101 authors from 22 countries of Europe, Minor Asia and North Africa, combining all the concerned research fields (entomology, ecology, genetics, mathematical modelling, medical and veterinary science, pest management) in a multidisciplinary approach to understand and model the processes underlying past, present and future moth expansion and to propose adapted management methods. Besides, the major biological patterns of the related processionary species are also detailed.

RES Insects

  • Author(s): DK

Discover the fascinating stories behind 300 species of insects and explore their world. Did you know that insects are essential to life on Earth? Without them we simply couldn't exist – they pollinate our crops, break down dead matter, and play a vital role in our ecosystems. Yet their numbers are plummeting in the face of changing climates, pesticide use, and threats to their essential habitats. This cutting-edge book, which is grounded in the latest research and written by members of the Royal Entomological Society, teaches you all you need to know about bugs, beetles, butterflies and more – revealing how vital they are to us and we are to them. From a look at how insects have been collected for study, to the use of insects in medicines, and their importance in art and literature, this fascinating book knits together science, food, culture and natural history. With advice on spotting insects in a range of habitats, species identification notes, a guide to attracting beneficial insects to your outdoor space, and more, this book is the ultimate wildlife-lover's companion.

Sixty years of discovering scolytine and platypodine diversity

Stephen L. Wood (1924?2009) was the leading authority of bark and pinhole borer beetle systematics (Scolytinae and Platypodinae) in the latter half of the 20th century. He published over 100 taxonomic papers including monographs and a worldwide catalog. His research advanced the understanding of Scolytinae and Platypodinaeÿ diversity and influenced several generations of bark beetle systematists. This Festschrift honors Dr. Wood?s 60 years of Scolytinae and Platypodinae systematic research. The 20 contributing authors represent worldwide taxonomic expertise that report on a range of topics from biology to phylogeny. These studies concern species from all major faunal regions. Twenty-three new taxa are described and five patronymics are named. Most taxonomic treatments include identification keys. A brief biography accompanied by a list of Dr. Wood?s publications is included.
