This book is the outgrowth of the COMETT II Course on Advanced Instru mentation, Data Interpretation, and Control of Biotechnological Processes organized by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and the Universiteit Gent, and held at Gent, Belgium, October 1994. The editors of the present volume were very fortunate to find all invited speakers prepared to write state-of-the-art expositions based on their lec tures. Special thanks are due to all of them. The result is an account of recent advances in instrumentation, data interpretation, and model based op timization and control of bioprocesses. For anyone interested in this emerg ing field, this text is of value and provides comprehensive revie...
Selected Proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Systems Analysis and Computing in Water Quality Management, Held in Gent, Belgium, 18-20 September 2000. The focus of the IWA Specialist Group on Systems Analysis and Computing is essentially methodological. Its goal is to foster discussion of the interdisciplinary issues cutting across the many topics of interest within IWA. Consequently, the themes of the symposium did not reflect specific concerns with sewers, or wastewater treatment, or river basin management, or surface water quality, or groundwater contamination. Rather the symposium was organised along the lines of new models, decision support systems, uncertainty and risk ana...
Food process modelling provides an authoritative review of one of the most exciting and influential developments in the food industry. The modelling of food processes allows analysts not only to understand such processes more clearly but also to control them more closely and make predictions about them. Modelling thus aids the search for greater and more consistent food quality. Written by a distinguished international team of experts, Food process modelling covers both the range of modelling techniques and their practical applications across the food chain.
The need for water quality information is increasingly being met by systems mainly based on automated measurement devices. In order to discuss the state of the art and the future possibilities the AutMoNet 2002 conference was organized to enhance the dialogue between water specialists, plant operators, chemists and instrument suppliers. This interdisciplinary dialogue is essential for the development of solutions for water quality management. The scientific program of AutMoNet 2002 covered a wide range of topics from leading edge sensor technology, wise use of novel technology, data to information transfer, successful end-user applications in municipal water quality management, environmental ...
Mathematical modelling of activated sludge systems is used widely for plant design, optimisation, training, controller design and research. The quality of simulation studies varies depending on the project objectives, finances and expertise available. Consideration has to be given to the model accuracy and the amount of time required carrying out a simulation study to produce the desired accuracy. Inconsistent approaches and insufficient documentation make quality assessment and comparison of simulation results difficult or almost impossible. A general framework for the application of activated sludge models is needed in order to overcome these obstacles. The genesis of the Good Modelling Pr...

Contains the papers presented at the IFAC Conference on Modelling and Control in Agriculture, Horticulture and Post-Harvest Processing held in Wageningen, The Netherlands. This work includes an inside view of the challenges of production for advanced life support systems in space.
The five-volume set LNCS 9786-9790 constitutes the refereed proceedingsof the 16th International Conference on Computational Science and ItsApplications, ICCSA 2016, held in Beijing, China, in July 2016. The 239 revised full papers and 14 short papers presented at 33 workshops were carefully reviewed and selected from 849 submissions. They are organized in five thematical tracks: computational methods, algorithms and scientific applications; high performance computing and networks; geometric modeling, graphics and visualization; advanced and emerging applications; and information systems and technologies.
The Molecular Biology of the Bacilli: Volume II is a collection of material relevant to the basic knowledge of the bacillus system and to the development of the bacillus system for industrial applications. This volume presents bacillus research studies on the unique characteristics of bacilli and its interesting comparisons with other bacteria, specifically Escherichia coli. The first four chapters focus on the Bacillus subtilis, specifically the translational specificity, DNA repair, chemotaxis, and sporulation. Chapter 5 discusses the protoplast fusion in bacillus while Chapter 6 delves on the secretion of proteins by bacilli. Chapter 7 explores the function of bacilli as insecticide. Bacillus thuringiensis is also mentioned in this chapter. This topic is further discussed in Chapter 8 where the genetics and molecular biology of B. thuringiensis are discussed. This volume aims to be of help to students and researchers in various fields of biochemistry, genetics, biological sciences, and microbiology.
