Renormalization Group '91 - Proceedings Of The 2nd International Conference

The papers included here deal with the many faces of renormalization group formalism as it is used in different branches of theoretical physics. The subjects covered emphasize various applications to the theory of turbulence, chaos, quantum chaos in dynamical systems, spin systems and vector models. Also discussed are applications to related topics such as quantum field theory and chromodynamics, high temperature superconductivity and plasma physics.

Professor Nicholas N Govorun, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences, was the principal organizer of the precedent meetings held at Dubna (1979, 1983, 1985). Unfortunately, he passed away in 1989. This volume is to honor his support in Computer Algebra. This is perhaps the only meeting of the entire soviet union computer algebra community and foreign scientists. The meeting presented scientific results, plans for research facilities, and status reports of the basic areas of investigations. The fields covered include computer algebra systems and general algorithms as well as applied algorithms, programs and results in computer algebra applications (mainly in physics).

Renormalization

The purpose of this section is to give you a sketch of how quantum field theory works, where Feynman graphs come from and why they are so useful, where the infinities come from, and how we have learned to deal with them without compromising the physical principles involved. I am purposely treating the problem at the level of the 1940s and 1950s, so as to keep the basic ideas clear and avoid the more difficult problems and more sophisticated methods of recent years. I shall relate my discussion simply to quantum electrodynamics (QED) since that is the most familiar case and the case that was in the forefront from the beginning (though in fact I shall ignore many of the special complications t...

Perspectives In Particle Physics '94 - Proceedings Of The 7th Adriatic Meeting On Particle Physics

This volume contains mini reviews on progress in lattice QCD, baryons in heavy quark effective theories, recent results from LEP experiments, Higgs and SUSY search at LHC, physics at DAøNE-INFN, particle astrophysics and high energy neutrino telescopes. There are also specialized topics on mass effects on running coupling in Bogoliubov renormalization group, neutrino physics, extended Higgs structures, physics beyond the Standard Model, CP-violation studies, mesons and glueballs for large NC, dynamic confinement, isospin violation, effective field theories, the fermion mass problem, domain wall, monopoles, meson spectroscopy, Grassman space and particle theories at finite temperatures, and nonlocal field theories. Contributions describe the latest progress in both theoretical and experimental physics.

Foundations And Interpretation Of Quantum Mechanics: In The Light Of A Critical-historical Analysis Of The Problems And Of A Synthesis Of The Results

The aim of this book is twofold: to provide a comprehensive account of the foundations of the theory and to outline a theoretical and philosophical interpretation suggested from the results of the last twenty years. There is a need to provide an account of the foundations of the theory because recent experience has largely confirmed the theory and offered a wealth of new discoveries and possibilities. On the other side, the following results have generated a new basis for discussing the problem of the interpretation: the new developments in measurement theory; the experimental generation of “Schrödinger cats”; recent developments which allow, for the first time, the simultaneous measurement of complementary observables; quantum information processing, teleportation and computation. To accomplish this task, the book combines historical, systematic and thematic approaches.

The traditional purpose of the Adriatic Meeting is to present most advanced scienti?c research conducted by the lecturers who take part in the development of their ?elds and, in addition, to provide a school-like atmosphere for young scientists. Dubrovnik, as a geographical centre of this region of Europe, provided a most adequate location for this conference. Having very agreeable surroundings, the conference site nevertheless gave a focus for very strong scienti?c interaction. The subjects chosen for the 8th meeting, in September 2001, were gauge theories, particle phenomenology, string theories and cosmology. We were able to bring together a very good cross section of outstanding scientis...

Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue

Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-75) was one of the greatest composers of the 20th century, as well as the first major Soviet composer. In the fourth edition of Dmitri Shostakovich Catalogue: The First Hundred Years and Beyond, Derek C. Hulme names and describes all known musical compositions of the Russian composer. More than 175 major works are annotated and discussed, including such comprehensive details as titles and subtitles, dates of composition, instrumentation, and duration; information on dedications and premieres; arrangements by the composer and others; publication details; notes on bibliographical references and the location of the autograph score; and comprehensive chronological lists...

Quantum Field Theory and Beyond

This book contains a collection of essays written in honor of Wolfhart Zimmermann's 80th birthday, most of them based on talks presented at a symposium in his honor. The book shows the unifying force of a subject (Quantum Field Theory) and a person (Zimmermann). It ranges from fundamental questions in quantum physics over applications to particle physics and noncommutative geometry to the latest developments in many body theory and dynamical systems. These key ideas are elucidated by worldwide-recognized experts including Faddeev, Becchi, Buchholz, Lowenstein and Salmhofer.Readers seeking examples on how a subject has evolved, diversified and deepened over the course of several decades and how a single person can influence this process can find here a perfect illustration. Through it all, readers are treated to a high-brow intellectual adventure

The Conceptual Completion and Extensions of Quantum Mechanics 1932-1941. Epilogue: Aspects of the Further Development of Quantum Theory 1942-1999

Quantum Theory, together with the principles of special and general relativity, constitute a scientific revolution that has profoundly influenced the way in which we think about the universe and the fundamental forces that govern it. The Historical Development of Quantum Theory is a definitive historical study of that scientific work and the human struggles that accompanied it from the beginning. Drawing upon such materials as the resources of the Archives for the History of Quantum Physics, the Niels Bohr Archives, and the archives and scientific correspondence of the principal quantum physicists, as well as Jagdish Mehra's personal discussions over many years with most of the architects of quantum theory, the authors have written a rigorous scientific history of quantum theory in a deeply human context. This multivolume work presents a rich account of an intellectual triumph: a unique analysis of the creative scientific process. The Historical Development of Quantum Theory is science, history, and biography, all wrapped in the story of a great human enterprise. Its lessons will be an aid to those working in the sciences and humanities alike.
