Lucianne has the power to inflict pain on anyone she wishes--an ability that renders a girl unconscious on the day she discovers it. Unbeknownst to her, the use of magic reveals her location to the Qroes --a sadistic association intent on stealing the powers of individuals like her. With her ability far too new to control, she is kidnapped, beaten, and thrown into a cell. She believes the metal lock of the cell has sealed her fate... until an unexpected visitor appears outside her cell in the dead of night, whisking her away to Soratia--a world ruled by magic and roamed by griffin-human hybrids. To Lucianne, Soratia soon becomes home. When the Qroes land their hands on Soratia's most powerful asset, shattering the tranquility that had rested over the land, Lucianne takes it upon herself to stop them from wreaking more havoc onto her new home. But her powers are unreliable, and as more and more teens her age disappear into the enemy's clutches, Lucianne must make a decision: go after the enemy and risk death, or run to safety and hide, leaving thousands of lives to perish.

Essays, conversations, and documentation map the work of the artist Janek Simon. Artist Janek Simon tends to say he is interested in many, even too many, things: from globalization and political geography to artificial intelligence and financial speculation, from DIY strategies to postcolonial theories within Eastern Europe. This reader decodes fifteen years of his work. It opens with the world of synthetic folklore, a speculative visual language between particularism and universalism, created with the help of AI and composed of mosaics generated by algorithms combining motifs from India, Africa, South America, Europe, and Poland. Simon's work asks if AI can protect us from the traps of homo...

We shone brightly, burned fiercely. Now that the secret is out, everyone at the Eyrie treats Veronyka differently, and with Tristan still a hostage of the scheming Lord Rolan—and Sev with him ...

Superhumanity

A wide-ranging and challenging exploration of design and how it engages with the self The field of design has radically expanded. As a practice, design is no longer limited to the world of material objects but rather extends from carefully crafted individual styles and online identities to the surrounding galaxies of personal devices, new materials, interfaces, networks, systems, infrastructures, data, chemicals, organisms, and genetic codes. Superhumanity seeks to explore and challenge our understanding of “design” by engaging with and departing from the concept of the “self.” This volume brings together more than fifty essays by leading scientists, artists, architects, designers, p...

The Good Lie

Six teens murdered. A suspect behind bars. A desperate father. In a case this shadowy, the truth is easy to hide. Psychiatrist Dr. Gwen Moore is an expert on killers. She's spent a decade treating California's most depraved predators and unlocking their motives--predators much like the notorious Bloody Heart serial killer, whose latest teenage victim escaped and then identified local high school teacher Randall Thompson as his captor. The case against Thompson as the Bloody Heart Killer is damning--and closed, as far as Gwen and the media are concerned. If not for one new development... Defense attorney Robert Kavin is a still-traumatized father whose own son fell prey to the BH Killer. Convinced of Thompson's innocence, he steps in to represent him. Now Robert wants Gwen to interview the accused, create a psych profile of the killer and his victims, and help clear his client's name. As Gwen and Robert grow closer and she dives deeper into the investigation, grave questions arise. So does Gwen's suspicion that Robert is hiding something--and that he might not be the only one with a secret.

When Love Sticks Around

Hand-me-down pants that don't quite fit, twilight bike rides down sleepy neighborhood streets, sweaty family camping trips, the things that almost break you, and the things you barely notice-it's hard to see the shape of your life until you're looking back on it. In this collection of short essays, Danielle Dayney recounts her experiences as an awkward child in the piecemeal family that raised her. From her biological father's absence to her mother's battle with cancer to the birth of her daughter, Dayney's stories venture beyond anecdote to nest safely among the tangled experiences that shape the people we become. With a keen eye for the pebbles of humor and glimmers of beauty along the rough roads of her life, Dayney has crafted a book that feels as familiar as a home-cooked meal and as exciting as the first night in a new city. When Love Sticks Around is a memoir of love, loss, humor, identity, and above all, family-the one you're born into and the one you gather along the way. Those are the things worth sticking around for.

Atlas of Modernity' is an exhibition that allows to see the collection of Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland, in a different way, but, more importantly, it is also a story of modernity and its meaning from a contemporary perspective constructed with the works included in the exhibition. The exhibition does not report the history of modernity put in chronological order, neither does it present the history of modern art. It focuses on the most important phenomena that are commonly connected with that which is modern, such as: emancipation, autonomy, industrialisation, capital, urbanisation, experiment, mechanization and revolution. By creating a 'collage' of artworks from different periods, representing different aesthetics and artistic attitudes around these notions the exhibition poses questions about how the character of the phenomena changed, how the way they were perceived altered and, most importantly, to what extent they shape contemporary reality. Exhibition: Muzeum Sztuki Lódz, Poland (since 24.01.2014).
