To Live for the People, to Die for the Lord

" . . . vividly detailed and emotional storytelling . . . Dr. Kim paints moments of passion and faith that are powerfully moving. Above all, these stories challenge believers to think what faith and passion is all about, and evoke such questions as what it means to be a husband, a wife, a man and a woman of God." Rev. Kenneth Choe Senior Paster, Ttokamsa Mission Church, LA "Well written . . . I would like to place this book next to Richard Kim's The Martyred, a famous novel based on the Korean War." Yearn Hong Choi, Ph.D. Poet, Writer, Former Professor, and Founding President of the Korean Poets and Writers Group in the Washington, D.C. Area. " . . . As a fan of historical novels, this book ...

Quiet Odyssey

Mary Paik Lee left her native country in 1905, traveling with her parents as a political refugee after Japan imposed control over Korea. Her father worked in the sugar plantations of Hawaii briefly before taking his family to California. They shared the poverty-stricken existence endured by thousands of Asian immigrants in the early twentieth century, working as farm laborers, cooks, janitors, and miners. Lee recounts racism on the playground and the ravages of mercury mining on her father’s health, but also entrepreneurial successes and hardships surmounted with grace. With a new foreword by David K. Yoo, this edition reintroduces Quiet Odyssey to readers interested in Asian American history and immigration studies. The volume includes thirty illustrations and a comprehensive introduction and bibliographic essay by respected scholar Sucheng Chan, who collaborated closely with Lee to edit the biography and ensure the work was true to the author’s intended vision. This award-winning book provides a compelling firsthand account of early Korean American history and continues to be an essential work in Asian American studies.

Immigrant Entrepreneurs

A decade in preparation, Immigrant Entrepreneurs offers the most comprehensive case study ever completed of the causes and consequences of immigrant business ownership. Koreans are the most entrepreneurial of America's new immigrants. By the mid-1970s Americans had already become aware that Korean immigrants were opening, buying, and operating numerous business enterprises in major cities. When Koreans flourished in small business, Americans wanted to know how immigrants could find lucrative business opportunities where native-born Americans could not. Somewhat later, when Korean-black conflicts surfaced in a number of cities, Americans also began to fear the implications for intergroup rela...
