The Intercultural Weaving of Historical Texts
The European view on history was shaken to its foundations when missionaries in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries discovered that Chinese history was older than European and Biblical history. With an analysis of the Chinese, Manchu and European sources on ancient Chinese history, this essay proposes an early case of “intercultural historiography,” in which historical texts of different cultures are interwoven. It focusses on the ways Chinese and European authors interpreted stories about marvellous births by the concubines of Emperor Ku. These stories have been the object of a wide variety of interpretations in Chinese texts, each of them representing a different historical genre. They are excellent case-studies to illustrate how the Chinese hermeneutic strategies shaped the diversity of interpretations given by Europeans.
Adventures in Chinese Bureaucracy
This book is a personal saga of woe and intrigue. It recounts a seemingly endless succession of false starts, missteps, detours, dead ends, and disappointments, endured over five years, in the ultimately successful pursuit of a sponsoring unit in the People's Republic of China, for a research project on the rural industrial and artisanal enterprises of Dongyang country, Zhejiang Province. We follow author Cooper in his veritable Confucian perambulation from ministry to ministry, bureau to bureau, institute to institute, academy to academy, office to office, university to university, until he finally manages to reach a quid pro quo with Zhejiang University. Under that agreement, the project would be carried out in collaboration with Professor Jiang Yinhuo of the department of economics. The trials, tribulations and humiliations Cooper and Jiang suffered under the close supervision of the county Foreign Affairs and Public Security Offices while they gathered their 'data' over two field seasons, are described in detail.

Dictionary of the Ben Cao Gang Mu, Volume 3
The Ben cao gang mu, compiled in the second half of the sixteenth century by a team led by the physician Li Shizhen (1518–1593) on the basis of previously published books and contemporary knowledge, is the largest encyclopedia of natural history in a long tradition of Chinese materia medica works. Its description of almost 1,900 pharmaceutically used natural and man-made substances marks the apex of the development of premodern Chinese pharmaceutical knowledge. The Ben cao gang mu dictionary offers access to this impressive work of 1,600,000 characters. This third book in a three-volume series offers detailed biographical data on all identifiable authors, patients, witnesses of therapies, transmitters of recipes, and further persons mentioned in the Ben cao gang mu and provides bibliographical data on all textual sources resorted to and quoted by Li Shizhen and his collaborators.
A History of Literature in the Ming Dynasty
This book explores poems, novels, legends, operas and other genres of writing from the Ming Dynasty. It is composed of two parts: the literary history; and comprehensive reference materials based on the compilation of several chronologies.
