Gary Kuehn became known in the sixties for his sculptures, which evolve in the field of tension between Minimalism and Abstract Expressionism. Since then Kuehn has developed an extensive oeuvre between these two intriguing poles. Careful craftsmanship and a sense of material presence distinguish his works, which always have a metaphorical and a psychological dimension as well. For several years now, Kuehn-who has been known to an international audience since his participation in documenta 6 in 1976-has been working on a comprehensive documentation of his body of work. This publication presents some of his best works, selected by Kuehn himself, systematically and chronologically categorized according to individual groups. An essay by Dorothea Zwirner and an interview with the artist by Donna De Salvo shed light on Kuehn's artistic development.

Canadian artist Rodney Graham strolls in his works through the landscape of Modernism. On his meandering itinerary through photography, literature, music, art, film, psychology, and linguistics, we encounter Richard Wagner, Stéphane Mallarmé, Edgar Allen Poe, Sigmund Freud, and Donald Judd – not to mention the prevalent myths of cinema and popular music. The contradictions engendered thereby – between conceptual gravity and humorous play, reverential homage and scenarized self-presentation, cultural ready mades and a sense of connectedness to nature – betray the profile of a contemporary melancholic. Now for the first time, Dorothea Zwirner's introduction to Rodney Graham's complete works – including a representative selection of works with artist's commentary – offers a broad monographic overview.

Art, Technology and Nature

  • Categories: Art

Are art and technology coming into a closer relationship with nature? Through a selection of innovative readings by international scholars, this book argues that since 1900 we have experienced a renewed negotiation of the convergent triangle of art, technology and nature, analysing its shifting constellations in post-medieval times. Through this negotiation, art becomes truly complementary to technology in understanding nature’s agencies and may gain an important role in adjusting technology’s present utilitarian hegemony.
