Total Design
Many of the great architectural innovators of the 20th century - Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, Eero Saarinen, Greene and Greene, and Robert Venturi among others - have been drawn to the concept of total design, a comprehensive approach where interiors and exteriors are designed together as complete architectural works. According to family lore, the author was descended from a Lord Sherborne in England. For years, the author tried to find information about the Lords of Sherborne to no avail, the family was apparently extinct. However, using the internet, the author uncovered the Sherborne secret and proved his family's relationship to the Lords of Sherborne. The author surprisingly finds himself descended over 100 times from the Kings of England and from other notables, including the Howard family, Earls of Suffolk & Berkshire. Most surprising genealogical discovery: that he is a 6th cousin, once-removed, of the former Princess Diana of Wales, and 7th cousin to Princes William and Harry Windsor. In 1699 John Aubrey began to compile notes for a scheme for the education of young gentlemen. The manuscript he left has never been published. The editor of the volume organized and re-arranged the text and has provided an historical Introduction and detailed notes. Aubrey gives a graphic account of education at the time. He displays a remarkable breadth of knowledge of the broad issues of history, law, mechanics, science and pedagogy and he was intensely curious about the practicalities of teaching language and number, the effects of puberty, diet, travel, games and music.

Women Film Editors
When the movie business adopted some of the ways of other big industries in 1920s America, women--who had been essential to the industry's early development--were systematically squeezed out of key behind-the-camera roles. Yet, as female producers and directors virtually disappeared for decades, a number of female film editors remained and rose to the top of their profession, sometimes wielding great power and influence. Their example inspired a later generation of women to enter the profession at mid-century, several of whom were critical to revolutionizing filmmaking in the 1960s and 1970s with contributions to such classics as Bonnie and Clyde, Jaws and Raging Bull. Focusing on nine of these women and presenting shorter glimpses of nine others, this book tells their captivating personal stories and examines their professional achievements.
