You Know You Live Near a Factory Farm When Your Kids Go Fishing with a Pool Skimmer

In Rural America the biggest threat to the health and well-being of the community is the same activity that once strengthened and nurtured it - farming. Industrial farming is rolling the dice against a dystopian future of environmental meltdown, antibiotic-resistant pathogens, and genetically modified organisms in a race to quickly amass wealth. Using a simple picture-book style, and the buoyancy of humor, this book navigates the flood of destructive farming practices that have already engulfed the rural community, and are spreading.

I have tried to keep this book a factual, documented indictment of government misconduct; and I failed. There is no way that I can hide the layers of disappointment and anger at years of failure to bring even a small measure of Social Justice to the rural communities of Tompkins County. If there are inconsistencies in style and editing; they are intentional - because I did not want to read too closely; and remember too vividly. The need for Justice is like a glowing coal; still waiting for the fuel to blaze up.

Since 1876, approximately 16,000 young men have enjoyed at least a taste of glory by appearing in big league games, many of them only a few times. By the end of the 2009 season, out of the millions who have aspired, fewer than three thousand individuals had had the good fortune to be a major league regular for five or more seasons. The median age at which they hung up their spikes was 35. However, 197 men played in their last big league contest at the age of 30 or younger. With a focus on the stories of 15 greats and near-greats, this book provides information on these 197 men. Why did their careers end so soon? The reasons are varied and include drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, illness, injury, banishment, and declining ability among others.
