This book is a compilation of various sources that form a coherent narrative that leads up to, documents, and explores the repercussions of the death of George McCowan King, a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force who was shot down over Germany on September 22, 1943. Focussing on the period from late 1942 to the end of the war, but extending even into the 1990s, the voices that combine to tell the story of the navigator's life and death include his letters, the letters of other family members, correspondence with families of other servicemen & friends, diary & logbook entries, and official government missives concerning the circumstances of the death and the naming of King Creek in northern Saskatchewan.
Metal Scrappers and Thieves
This book explores the little-known world of scrappers and metal thieves. Benjamin F. Stickle bases his study on field research collected while traversing communities with thieves and scrappers. Drawing on candid interviews, observations of criminals at work, and participation in the scrapping subculture, the volume describes the subculture of scrappers and identifies differences between scrappers and metal thieves. Through the offenders’ perspective, often quoting their candid responses, Stickle explores the motivations for metal theft as well as the techniques and methods for successfully committing theft. The book discusses how these methods and techniques are learned and identifies ways—often through the thieves’ own words—to prevent metal theft. Throughout the book, Stickle also challenges common assumptions about this community and identifies wider policy implications.
Letters Home
John Edwin Gardiner was the eldest son of James "Jimmy" Gardiner, the most prominent Liberal politician of his day in western Canada. Edwin was called up by the RCAF in November 1940, received his wings in October 1941, and travelled to England in early November 1941. On August 18, 1942, on the eve of the Dieppe Raid, Edwin wrote to his father: "At long last we're going to take part in something big which you will read all about in the papers long before you get this letter." Edwin Gardiner was killed when his plane went down on the following day. James Gardiner, who had lost two brothers in the First World War, had now lost his son to war. His wife, Violet, found the grief unbearable and took her own life in October 1944, yet another casualty of war.
