James the Good

Sir James the Good, one of the finest soldiers Scotland ever produced, is sometimes better known by the name given to him by the English - the 'Black Douglas'. He terrified the northern shires of England throughout the reign of King Robert the Bruce and the Wars of Independence. When Robert the Bruce died Sir James, as his champion, was entrusted with his heart which he carried on the Crusades. David R Ross brings history alive as he tells the story of Sir James' life. Ross' research found him retracing Sir James' journey to the Holy Land and rediscovering battle grounds, providing a personal view of history. With a refreshing look at the subject, and featuring all new information and research, interesting maps, battleplans and photographs, this book will make Scottish history accessible and understandable for the casual reader, while delighting history buffs.

Marjory Stoneman Douglas

Born in Minnesota in 1890 and raised and educated in Massachusetts, Marjory Stoneman Douglas came to Florida in 1915 to work for her father, who had just started a newspaper called the Herald in a small town called Miami. In this "frontier" town, she recovered from a misjudged marriage, learned to write journalism and fiction and drama, took on the fight for feminism and racial justice and conservation long before those causes became popular, and embarked on a long and uncommonly successful voyage into self-understanding. Way before women did this sort of thing, she recognized her own need for solitude and independence, and built her own little house away from town in an area called Coconut ...

This is the story of Harpers of Aberdeen, who developed from their mid-19th-century fencing business a unique system of suspension that allowed their light foot suspension bridges to be relatively rigid, and so overcame the main disadvantage of such bridges. Harpers built in excess of 60 of them throughout the UK and the British Empire between 1870-1910, and they have been little documented, although the Harper system of suspension was unique at the time, providing a noticeable stiffening of the structure. John Harper was one of the first to use steel wire rope, now universally used. The author, who is John Harper's great-grandson, searched the globe, found, and crossed those still in use, and describes the development of the idea, his journeys, and the communities the bridges served.
