With half of humanity already living in towns and cities and that proportion expected to increase in the coming decades, society - both Western and non-Western - is fast becoming urban and even mega-urban. As such, research in urban settings is evidently timely and of great importance. Urban Inequalities
This collection brings together leading thinkers on human beings in urban spaces and inequalities therein. The contributors eschew conceptual confusion between equality — of opportunity, of access, of the right to compete for whatever goal one chooses to pursue — and levelling. Living with London's Olympics
The quadrennial summer Olympic Games are renowned for producing the world's biggest single-city cultural event. This mega-event attracts a live audience of millions, a television audience of billions, and generates incredible scrutiny before, during, and after each installment. This is due to the fact that underpinning the 17 days of spectacular sporting events is approximately a decade worth of planning, preparing, and politicking. It is during this decade that prospective host cities must plan and win their bids before embarking upon seven years of urban upheaval and social transformation in order to stage the world's premier sporting event. This book draws on seven years of ethnographic inquiry around the London 2012 Olympics and contrasts the rhetoric and reality of mega-event delivery. Lindsay argues that in its current iteration the twin notions of beneficial Olympic legacies and Olympic delivery benefits for hosting communities are largely incompatible.
Market Versus Society
This volume addresses the fraught relationship between market and society in times of social and economic crisis, exploring how they interact in key social, cultural, and political arenas on a global scale. The contributors examine the neoliberal market in anthropological and ethnographic terms to question whether “market logic” has won out against social aspects of human existence in a framework of minimal state protection and the devaluation of human labor. Neapolitan scholar Italo Pardo has produced a thoughtful and original account of the moral life of Naples, where the ethics of family and neighborhood exist in tension with the constraints of church and government. Dr. Pardo shows how different ethical systems are accommodated in the choices of everyday life, while success is measured by satisfying spiritual obligations as well as by material gain. This is one of the very few ethnographic studies of a European city; it questions old assumptions and raises fresh issues in the field of urban studies.
