Women represent half of the world's human resources. Though women perform different roles (production, household and productive), women continue to be mainly responsible for 'Care Economy'. It is said that unpaid work of these women comes to around US $ 11 trillion/ annum which is equivalent to half of the world's GDP. But this contribution goes unnoticed and seldom income statistics enters national income accounts.
Agriculture was the predominant sector of Indian economy at the time of Independence from colonial rule in 1947. The share of agriculture in total gross domestic product at that time was above 55 per cent, and about 70 per cent of workforce was engaged in agriculture sector. Since the urban industrial and tertiary sectors were very small, and absorbed only 26 per cent of labour force, vast majority of Indian population, about 83 per cent, lived in rural areas (Census 1951).
The volume aims to understand the concept of governance in its most complex manifestation and to identify its theoretical roots in the 'neo-liberal' mode of thinking cutting across different sub-disciplines in social sciences. It fills gaps in the available literature that tend to reduce governance to just another mode of public administration undermining the ideological challenges in the era of globalization. The volume has two interconnected parts: the first deals with the conceptual articulation of governance while the second is devoted to study the phenomenon empirically. The essays together with the introduction provide a critical analysis of the governance paradigm, which is concerned not only with the reform in public administration but also identifies new areas of research of a multi-disciplinary nature. By drawing attention to the changes in the theoretical domain of public administration-the study is both a comprehensive review of the available literature and also a quest for 'new' directions in the discipline.

Born in Calcutta and schooled in Poughkeepsie, Madison, Manhattan, beautiful, luminous Tara leaves her American husband behind as she journeys back to India. But the Calcutta she finds on her return -- seething with strikes, riots, and unrest -- is vastly different from the place she remembers. In this taut, ironic tale of colliding cultures, Tara seeks to reconcile the old world -- that of her father, the redoubtable Bengal Tiger -- and the brash new one that is being so violently ushered in. In this, her first novel, Mukherjee claimed as her subject the shock, uneasiness, and haphazard transformation that are part of the immigrant experience -- a theme she has masterfully woven into her subsequent novels, Wife and Jasmine, and into The Middleman and Other Stories, for which she won the National Book Critics Circle Award.
