Dental caries is defined as a multifactorial, transmissible, infectious oral disease caused primarily by the complex interaction of cariogenic oral flora (biofilm) with fermentable dietary carbohydrates on the tooth surface over time. At the tooth surface and sub-surface level, dental caries results from a dynamic process of attack (demineralization) and restitution (remineralization) of the tooth matter. It is essential to understand that carious lesions, or cavitations in teeth, are signs of an underlying condition, an imbalance between protective factors (i.e., those favouring remineralization) and pathologic factors (i.e., those favouring demineralization), balance tilting towards the latter. In clinical practice, it is very easy to lose sight of this fact and focus entirely on the restorative treatment of caries lesions, failing to treat the underlying cause of the disease.
With this edition the book, Comparison in the Diagnostic Accuracy of Intraoral Periapical Radiograph” provides the opportunity to include recent progress in the rapidly changing field of diagnosis of the periapical lesion with various method. Subject matter with updated diagnostic method information remains as green as ever. We live in an era where the thirst for knowledge and urge for learning is so much increased. Conventional and digital radiography may not always be a reliable indicator in the diagnosis of periapical lesions. In order to overcome the shortcomings, new and promising imaging modalities like ultrasound should be considered in evaluating these lesions. So, in this book I undertaken to assess the efficacy of conventional radiography, digital radiography and ultrasound imaging in the diagnosis of periapical lesions. This book is written in simple language. I have tried to make this book easier to understand this book among the undergraduate and postgraduate students of, oral medicine and radiology. I heartily request my readers to let me know about error if found.
The use of radiographs and other imaging techniques plays an important role not only in the diagnosis but also in the treatment planning of patients with disorders of the face, jaws and the teeth. Today, we can’t imagine practice in any discipline of dentistry without this important aid. It would take a lifetime of clinical experience to encounter the whole range of the orofacial disorders and to become familiar with the varied radiographic appearances of the same condition. As there is no real substitute for personal experience, it is hoped that a collection and interpretation of radiographs will help to accelerate the learning process and will provide a reference for less common clinical conditions. It is not an easy task to interpret a good quality radiograph and so it is impossible to interpret a radiograph, which is not of good quality. So an essential or important criteria for the radiograph to be of diagnostic value is good quality. This book is an attempt has been made to study and understand there imaging principles applied to dentistry in detail.
The goal in periodontal therapy is the creation of an environment that is conducive to maintaining the patient’s dentition in good health, comfort and function. Today, with the introduction of advanced bone grafting techniques and sophisticated bone replacement graft materials, it is possible to increase the volume, width and height of bone in deficient areas enough to regenerate supporting periodontal tissues around questionable teeth and place implants in ideal positions and angulation resulting in more acceptable and predictable restoration. This book aims to discuss and elaborate the various bone grafts used in periodontal regenerative procedures and the bone graft substitutes that have come to existence more recently with improved properties.
