Gandhi and Indian Independence

Several years after his assassination, Mahatma Gandhi remains an elusive figure - discomfiting and difficult to comprehend. In this book, Dr Padma Ramakrishnan gives great weight to Gandhi's role in Indian Independence and assesses his influence and triumphs. She has appraised the role of Mahatma Gandhi in the transfer of power from the point of view of a political scientist. The book is analytical and objective - presenting Gandhi as a political leader, not as a visionary. The author analyses the politics of negotiation in her chapters on the Shimla Conference, the Cabinet Mission Plan, and Interim Government. In the chapter "Gandhi and the Partition of India”, she concludes that it was not Gandhi who was responsible for the partition of India. This is a distinct contribution to the scholarly output of Gandhian studies.

India being one of the oldest civilizations in the world, the history of education in India is fascinating and can be traced back to the ancient era. Researchers and Historians have shown that from manufacturing the best steel in the world, sintering of Zinc to teaching the world to count, India has been a pioneer in science and technology centuries long before modern laboratories were set up. The contributions of ancient Indians to the community of science can be clearly understood by the well known comment of Albert Einstein, one of the greatest scientists of all times who stated "We owe a lot to the ancient Indians, teaching us how to count. Without which most modern scientific discoveries would have been impossible."

This collection of essays focuses on the post-1980s period of the Indian feminist movement, a moment rich in new and different modes of resistance, of widespread political engagements with issues of rights, of justice, of identity and much more. The writers here, all well-known activists and founders of some of the most important of feminist institutions, describe their individual and collective journeys, bringing attention to the movement, to their struggles, their campaigns, their victories and the challenges they have faced. In using the tools of feminist analysis – a focus on life stories, on oral accounts, on group formation and more – they also make a case for advocacy through lega...
