Liver Diseases

This book provides an in-depth coverage not only of liver pathology but also of diagnosis of the numerous types of liver disease, placing specific emphasis on current treatments of liver pathology including the most up-to-date information on liver transplantation. The first part of provides an in-depth account of the liver pathology in different conditions such as Hepatits, liver ischaemia reperfusion injury, Lyme disease, cirrhotic cardiomyopathy and hepatocellular carcinoma. The second part provides a comprehensive overview of diagnostic methods. Of particular interest are chapters on the latest techniques in Patient-specific 3D printing and transient elastography (FibroScan). The final pa...

Introduction to Protein Mass Spectrometry, Second Edition provides a comprehensive overview of this increasingly important, yet complex, analytical technique. This book enables readers to understand how determinations about protein identity from mass spectrometric data are made. Coverage begins with the technical basics, including preparations, instruments, and spectrometric analysis of peptides and proteins, before exploring applied use in biological applications, bioinformatics, database, and software resources. This new edition is fully updated to include the latest developments in the field and will feature new content covering recent progress in the areas where there have been the most ...

Protein Interaction Networks in Health and Disease

Protein Interaction Networks in Health and Disease

The identification and mapping of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) is a major goal in systems biology. Experimental data are currently produced in large scale using a variety of high-throughput assays in yeast or mammalian systems. Analysis of these data using computational tools leads to the construction of large protein interaction networks, which help researchers identify novel protein functions. However, our current view of protein interaction networks is still limited and there is an active field of research trying to further develop this concept to include important processes: the topology of interactions and their changes in real time, the effects of competition for binding to the ...

Anoikis

Anoikis

Anoikis is defined broadly as apoptosis that is inhibited by appropriate cell-matrix interactions. Normal and tumor cells vary widely in their sensitivity to anoikis, but, in general, metastatic tumor cells are inevitably anoikis-resistant. In particular, tumor cells that possess a cancer stem cell or mesenchymal phenotype, arising from the oncogenic Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT), are transcriptionally re-programmed to resist anoikis. While the anoikis response occurs through the mitochondrial pathway typically found in other apoptotic responses (e.g., DNA damage, death receptors, oxidative stress), the regulation of anoikis by cell-matrix signalling is unique and only partially characterized. The uniqueness of anoikis is: a. regulation by integrins, non-integrin matrix receptors, and the signaling complexes associated with them; b. regulation by metabolic changes occurring in response to attachment/detachment; c. regulation by oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes d. regulation by tumor microenvironment; e. regulation by EMT.

Control and Operation of Grid-Connected Wind Energy Systems

This edited book analyses and discusses the current issues of integration of wind energy systems in the power systems. It collects recent studies in the area, focusing on numerous issues including unbalanced grid voltages, low-voltage ride-through and voltage stability of the grid. It also explores the impact of the emerging technologies of wind turbines and power converters in the integration of wind power systems in power systems. This book utilizes the editors’ expertise in the energy sector to provide a comprehensive text that will be of interest to researchers, graduate students and industry professionals.

Diabetes and Fundus OCT brings together a stellar cast of authors who review the computer-aided diagnostic (CAD) systems developed to diagnose non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy in an automated fashion using Fundus and OCTA images. Academic researchers, bioengineers, new investigators and students interested in diabetes and retinopathy need an authoritative reference to bring this multidisciplinary field together to help reduce the amount of time spent on source-searching and instead focus on actual research and the clinical application. This reference depicts the current clinical understanding of diabetic retinopathy, along with the many scientific advances in understanding this condition. As the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in the assessment and management of diabetic retinopathy has become significant in understanding the vireo retinal relationships and the internal architecture of the retina, this information is more critical than ever.
