De la mano de Adán Ureña, un curandero local de la República Dominicana, la Dra. Goretti Virgili profundizó en el aprendizaje de las propiedades de las plantas medicinales para la sanación. Dada su formación científica, ha querido documentar los conocimientos transmitidos oralmente a lo largo de varias generaciones del uso tradicional de estas plantas en República Dominicana y en el trópico americano. En su viaje a la selva peruana encontró estas plantas caribeñas y muchas otras utilizadas por indígenas amazónicos. Para complementar este libro realizó estudios de nutrición y fitoterapia para así poner en manos del lector un manual que le ayude a ampliar su conocimiento en mejorar la salud y combatir enfermedades con plantas que nos ofrece la propia naturaleza. En la actualidad Goretti imparte cursos para transmitir todo este conocimiento.

La Fundación 38 grados es una entidad sin ánimo de lucro que se constituyó el 31 de octubre de 2014, con el objetivo de cumplir los deseos de las personas que están al final de la vida. En palabras de sus fundadoras: Nuestro objetivo es decirle a todas esas personas lo que les decía Cicely Saunders, pionera en los cuidados paliativos y fuente de inspiración de muchos en el acompañamiento de personas que están al final de su vida: «Tú me importas, por ser tú, importas hasta el último momento de tu vida y haremos todo lo que esté a nuestro alcance no solo para ayudarte a morir en paz, sino también a vivir hasta el día que mueras» La idea original de este libro solidario fue del escritor Daniel Cerrato.
