En juillet 1995, les forces serbes massacrèrent plus de huit mille hommes de l’enclave de Srebrenica sans que les Nations Unies réagissent. Ce massacre est désormais connu. Ce que l’on sait moins, c’est que Naser Oric, symbole de la résistance de Srebrenica, a été poursuivi devant le Tribunal international pour l’ex-Yougoslavie. Après trois années passées dans les prisons de La Haye, il fut – heureusement – acquitté. Rafaëlle Maison décrit le procès de La Haye comme un événement stupéfiant et tragique où la thèse du « seigneur de guerre », avancée par les représentants du procureur international Carla del Ponte et fondée sur les récits mensongers des assaillants serbes, va rapidement s’effondrer. Surtout, les témoins qui se succèdent permettent de comprendre ce que fut le combat des résistants, élus par leurs communautés et accompagnés d’une population réduite à la famine par l’encerclement serbe. Donnant d’abord à entendre leur parole, le livre espère rendre un hommage à ces combattants.
