Dublin City University 1980-2020
Dublin City University has grown rapidly from its origins as the National Institute for Higher Education, Dublin, which admitted just 200 students when it first opened in 1980. NIHED emerged from a fundamental review of the third level sector during the 1960s and 1970s. The path to university status in 1989 was not smooth, requiring strong leadership, vision and significant philanthropic support during a time of economic crisis. DCU is one of Ireland's youngest universities, and over the past four decades has become one of the most successful young universities in the world. It has been widely recognized as an innovative institution, strongly engaged in local, national and international communities and networks. Today the university has more than 17,000 students across three campuses in the north of the city, integrating four formerly independent colleges. This book relates the major achievements and many challenges in the forty years of DCU's growth, examining key policy and strategy decisions, the contributions of leading personalities, and the collective experiences of staff and students.
Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science
This open access book constitutes selected papers presented during the 30th Irish Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science, held in Munster, Ireland, in December 2022. The 41 presented papers were thoroughly reviewed and selected from the 102 submissions. They are organized in topical sections on machine learning, deep learning and applications; responsible and trustworthy artificial intelligence; natural language processing and recommender systems; knowledge representation, reasoning, optimisation and intelligent applications.
Language, Vision, and Music
Language, vision and music: what common cognitive patterns underlie our competence in these disparate modes of thought? Language (natural & formal), vision and music seem to share at least the following attributes: a hierarchical organisation of constituents, recursivity, metaphor, the possibility of self-reference, ambiguity, and systematicity. Can we propose the existence of a general symbol system with instantiations in these three modes or is the only commonality to be found at the level of such entities as cerebral columnar automata? Answers are to be found in this international collection of work which recognises that one of the basic features of consciousness is its MultiModality, that there are possibilities to model this with contemporary technology, and that cross-cultural commonalities in the experience of, and creativity within, the various modalities are significant. With the advent of Intelligent MultiMedia this aspect of consciousness implementation in mind/brain acquires new significance. (Series B)
Information and Communication Technologies for Development
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th IFIP WG 9.4 International Conference on Social Implications of Computers in Developing Countries, ICT4D 2020, which was supposed to be held in Salford, UK, in June 2020, but was held virtually instead due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 18 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 29 submissions. The papers present a wide range of perspectives and disciplines including (but not limited to) public administration, entrepreneurship, business administration, information technology for development, information management systems, organization studies, philosophy, and management. The History of Handball at Texas A&M University
Hitting a ball with the hand (Handball) is the oldest sport known to mankind. It has been almost 100 years since handball was introduced as an intramural sport at Texas A&M. This book connects a tie to those who helped handball along the way even before handball became a sport there and takes the reader through the years to the spring of 2022. Part of the history of handball is told in personal stories from those who have played at Texas A&M and the impact handball had on their lives and their lifetime achievements. Another part of the history includes a history of the Texas A&M courts, coaches, and Intramural Directors. With a rich history that has produced 26 players who have reached the All- American level and some who went on to become the world’s best, this story needed to be recorded.
