From Schlaefli to Schlafley
The immigrant ancestors of this family were Niklaus Schlafley (Schlaef- li) (1815-1895), born in Lyssach, Bern Canton, Switzerland, a son of Samuel Schlaefli and Elizabeth Niklaus. He married Elise (Elizabeth) Kobel (1812-1888) 1833 in Bern, Bern, Switzerland. She was born in Hettiswill, Bern Canton, Switzerland to Joseph Kobel and Barbara Grunder. They immigrated to America 1854 and settled first in Wayne Co., Ohio. Later lived in Isabella Co., Michigan where they died. They had six children, five born in Switzerland, youngest, Frederick Schlafley (b. 1855), born in Wayne Co., Ohio. Descendants live in Michigan, Ohio, California, Florida and else- where.

In 1964, Douglas Gilbert was hired by Look magazine to photograph a young up-and-coming musician named Bob Dylan. Gilbert snapped over 900 of the most candid shots ever taken of Dylan, less than a year before he became completely inaccessible to the public.
