Jacobi Dynamics

This book sets forth and builds upon the fundamentals of the dynamics of natural systems in formulating the problem presented by Jacobi in his famous lecture series "Vorlesungen tiber Dynamik" (Jacobi, 1884). In the dynamics of systems described by models of discrete and continuous media, the many-body problem is usually solved in some approximation, or the behaviour of the medium is studied at each point of the space it occupies. Such an approach requires the system of equations of motion to be written in terms of space co-ordinates and velocities, in which case the requirements of an internal observer for a detailed description of the processes are satisfied. In the dynamics discussed here...

An Invitation to Q-Series

The aim of these lecture notes is to provide a self-contained exposition of several fascinating formulas discovered by Srinivasa Ramanujan. Two central results in these notes are: (1) the evaluation of the Rogers–Ramanujan continued fraction — a result that convinced G H Hardy that Ramanujan was a “mathematician of the highest class”, and (2) what G. H. Hardy called Ramanujan's “Most Beautiful Identity”. This book covers a range of related results, such as several proofs of the famous Rogers–Ramanujan identities and a detailed account of Ramanujan's congruences. It also covers a range of techniques in q-series. Contents:Jacob's Triple Product IdentityThe Rogers-Ramanujan Identi...

Topics in Mathematical Physics, General Relativity, and Cosmology in Honor of Jerzy Pleba?ski

One of modern science's most famous and controversial figures, Jerzy Plebanski was an outstanding theoretical physicist and an author of many intriguing discoveries in general relativity and quantum theory. Known for his exceptional analytic talents, explosive character, inexhaustible energy, and bohemian nights with brandy, coffee, and enormous amounts of cigarettes, he was dedicated to both science and art, producing innumerable handwritten articles - resembling monk's calligraphy - as well as a collection of oil paintings. As a collaborator but also an antagonist of Leopold Infeld's (a coauthor of Albert Einstein's), Plebanski is recognized for designing the "heavenly" and "hyper-heavenly...

Class Groups of Number Fields and Related Topics

This book gathers original research papers and survey articles presented at the “International Conference on Class Groups of Number Fields and Related Topics,” held at Harish-Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad, India, on September 4–7, 2017. It discusses the fundamental research problems that arise in the study of class groups of number fields and introduces new techniques and tools to study these problems. Topics in this book include class groups and class numbers of number fields, units, the Kummer–Vandiver conjecture, class number one problem, Diophantine equations, Thue equations, continued fractions, Euclidean number fields, heights, rational torsion points on elliptic curves, cyclotomic numbers, Jacobi sums, and Dedekind zeta values. This book is a valuable resource for undergraduate and graduate students of mathematics as well as researchers interested in class groups of number fields and their connections to other branches of mathematics. New researchers to the field will also benefit immensely from the diverse problems discussed. All the contributing authors are leading academicians, scientists, researchers, and scholars.
