Earlham College, opened in 1847, is the second oldest Quaker college in the world. From a school intended for the "guarded religious education of the children of Friends," it has evolved to become an international institution of higher education, with faculty and students from around the world. From a campus where Old Earlham Hall housed everything--dormitories, classrooms, administrative offices, kitchen, library, and dining hall--Earlham now includes over 20 buildings dating back to 1861. Its alumni include a Nobel laureate--Wendell M. Stanley, class of 1926--and two Pulitzer Prize winners--Edwin Way Teale, class of 1922, and Manning Marable, class of 1971. Earlhamites have been politicians, authors, activists, and above all teachers and scientists. A wealth of archival photographs illustrate Earlham's evolution, highlighting leaders, faculty, student life, off-campus programs, athletics, alumni, and visitors to campus who have ranged from Martin Luther King Jr. to George Wallace.

Ubiquitous illegal lotteries known as policy flourished in Chicago’s Black community during the overlapping waves of the Great Migration. Policy “queens” owned stakes in lucrative operations while women writers and clerks canvased the neighborhood, passed out winnings, and kept the books. Elizabeth Schroeder Schlabach examines the complexities of Black women’s work in policy gambling. Policy provided Black women with a livelihood for themselves and their families. At the same time, navigating gender expectations, aggressive policing, and other hazards of the infromal economy led them to refashion ideas about Black womanhood and respectability. Policy earnings also funded above-board enterprises ranging from neighborhood businesses to philanthropic institutions, and Schlabach delves into the various ways Black women straddled the illegal policy business and reputable community involvement. Vivid and revealing, Dream Books and Gamblers tells the stories of Black women in the underground economy and how they used their work to balance the demands of living and laboring in Black Chicago.

In 1807, a small rural New York press published the first edition of P. D. Manville’s Lucinda; or the Mountain Mourner. Over the next five decades now fewer than ten printings of the novel appeared in three different states. In the book, the eponymous heroine is one of seven children left to the ailing and poverty-stricken widower Adrian Manvill. Although it is a memoir, Lucinda reads like a sentimental epistolary novel, where the heroine is seduced, abandoned, and then dies in isolation shortly after her illegitimate child is born. Mischelle B. Anthony’s critical edition rescues this once popular cautionary tale from obscurity and positions it among such classic early American narratives as Charlotte Temple and The Coquette. In her introduction, Anthony sheds light on the text’s multiple functions among its nineteenth-century readership and draws attention to its unique status as a narrative written by a participant in the events.
