The Lion and the Star

The Lion and the Star not only offers an informed glimpse into the intricacies of daily German life but also confirms the continuing danger of making sweeping generalizations about German Jews and non-Jews. In the aftermath of World War II, many viewed the Third Reich as an aberration in German history and laid blame with Hitler and his followers. Since the 1960s, historians have widened their focus, implicating “ordinary” Germans in the demise of German Jewry. Jonathan Friedman addresses this issue by investigation everyday relations between German Jews and their Gentile neighbors. Friedman examines three German communities of different sizes—Frankfurt am Main, Giessen, and Geisenheim...

'Intimately Associated for Many Years'

The Anglican Bishop George Bell (of Chichester) and the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Willem A. Visser’t Hooft (of Geneva) exchanged hundreds of letters between 1938 and 1958. The correspondence, reproduced and commented upon here, mirrors the efforts made across the ecumenical movement to unite the Christian churches and also to come to terms with an age of international crisis and conflict. In these first decades of the World Council, it was widely felt that the Church could make a noteworthy contribution to the mitigation of political tensions all over the world. That’s why Bell and Visser’t Hooft talked not only to bishops and the clergy, but also to the prime ministers and presidents of many countries. They raised their voices in memoranda and published their public letters in important newspapers. This was the World Council’s most successful period.

The Scientification of the "Jewish Question" in Nazi Germany describes the attempt of a considerable number of German scholars to counter the vanishing influence of religious prejudices against the Jews with a new antisemitic rationale. As anti-Jewish stereotypes of an old-fashioned soteriological kind had become dysfunctional under the pressure of secularization, a new, more objective explanation was needed to justify the age-old danger of Judaism in the present. In the 1930s a new research field called “Judenforschung” (Jew research) emerged. Its leading figures amalgamated racial and religious features to verify the existence of an everlasting “Jewish problem”. Along with that they offered scholarly concepts for its solution.

Ernst Röhm

"A one-time comrade and intimate of Adolf Hitler, Ernst Julius Gunther Rohm commanded the stormtroopers and had an influential and controversial career within the Nazi Party before being killed on Hitler's orders in 1934. This book, the first English-language biography of Rohm, overturns many misconceptions that have arisen about his polities and his role in Nazism - including the claim that he stood for a more revolutionary form of national socialism - and makes a significant contribution to our understanding of the Nazi rise to and consolidation of power."--BOOK JACKET.

Examines the close relationship between aristocratic Prussian landowners and the leadership of the Confessing Church and shows the limits of German conservative-elite opposition to Nazism. Contends that the opposition of the Confessing Church to the Nazi regime was highly ambiguous and argues that the so-called church struggle was but a special case of class struggle.
