Ed van der Elsken's Sweet Life published in 1966 is considered one of the key works of Dutch photobook history. In 1960, armed with two magazine commissions and a stipend from Netherlands television, Ed van der Elsken and his wife Gerda set off on a fourteen month journey around the world. Six years after their return, he published his travelogue Sweet Life which exhibited a panoply of layout effects - double-page bleeds, crops, printed in deep gravure, and different cover designs for each of the six countries in which it was published. Books on Books #13 presents a study of this classic book with a contemporary essay by Frits Gierstberg.--Publisher.

This beautifully illustrated monograph accompanies a full retrospective on the acclaimed Dutch photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken. Known for his unconventional technique and gritty, evocative images of people and places, Ed van der Elsken was a self- taught photographer whose work documented his own life and travels. This book offers a definitive overview of van der Elsken’s entire oeuvre, including his groundbreaking photo novel, Love on the Left Bank and his paean to 1950s Amsterdam, Once Upon a Time. On display at Amsterdam’s famed Stedelijk Museum, the exhibition at the center of this book focuses on the museum’s extensive collection of van der Elsken’s prints, and on the renowned installations he mounted there during his lifetime. Essays reveal the photographer’s early influences, including Weegee, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Robert Capa, while also showing how his confident, unorthodox, and self-expressionist style paved the way for late 20th-century photographers, including Larry Clark, Nan Goldin, and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Published in conjunction with an exhibition showing a range of works by Dutch photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken - images selected by fellow artists Marlene Dumas, Rineke Dijkstra and Marijke van Warmerdam - 'Look. Ed!' is about observing and making choices. Van der Elsken's photographs are intriguing in that they both document and voice emotion, simultaneously detached and empathising. The chosen images present not only the variety inherent in his work, but also his unique ability to portray the darker side of humanity and circumstances. Besides commentary from the selectors, the book includes additional texts by Annet Gelink and Jhim Lamoree. 0Exhibition: Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam, the Netherlands (8.9.-13.10.2012).
