This is an apologetic book, which focus its debate on the existence of God, first from the origin of everything according to the Old Testament views of the Bible, Science, and Philosophy, and then, from the revelation contained in the New Testament. The creation of the world is seen from the perspective of evolution. In addtion to answering few objections against the existence of God, it also addresses other themes related to Christianity such as the soul, miracles, original sin, and the end of the world, while giving special attention to the Resurrection of Jesus.
Beginning with volume 41 (1979), the University of Texas Press became the publisher of the Handbook of Latin American Studies, the most comprehensive annual bibliography in the field. Compiled by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress and annotated by a corps of more than 130 specialists in various disciplines, the Handbook alternates from year to year between social sciences and humanities. The Handbook annotates works on Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and the Guianas, Spanish South America, and Brazil, as well as materials covering Latin America as a whole. Most of the subsections are preceded by introductory essays that serve as biannual evaluations of the literature and research under way in specialized areas. The Handbook of Latin American Studies is the oldest continuing reference work in the field. Lawrence Boudon became the editor in 2000. Even though the Portuguese are relatively new to Canada, they have made major contributions to the cultural mosaic of the country. Containing many new essays, this second edition of The Portuguese in Canada updates the work that filled a gap in the scholarly literature of multiculturalism in Canada. The contributors come from a variety of disciplines - anthropology, geography, history, literature, linguistics, sociology, and urban planning - and are from Portugal, Canada and the United States. Essays examine the history of the Portuguese diaspora, the Portuguese presence in Newfoundland and its fisheries, language and identity, urban experiences (especially in Montreal and Toronto), and history and literature. This second edition of The Portuguese in Canada conveys the multi-faceted contributions the Portuguese have made to Canada and considers possible future growth and development of Portuguese-Canadian culture and heritage.
This book presents a proposal to better define thematic relations by exploring the relation between language and cognition. It analyzes the relation between grammatically defined roles such as agent and patient (semantic roles), and elaborate thematic relations (ETRs) actually accessible to language users. It shows that many phenomena previously analyzed as grammatical can be described in a more simple and convenient way by postulating direct connection between syntactic complements and cognitive relations present in the schema evoked by the verb. The volume focuses on a topic which has been the object of much discussion in the recent literature, namely the definition and delimitation of sem...
This book explores how academia seeks to systematize the changes taking place in radio in its adaptation to the digital era. The individual chapters here investigate the most important issues currently under study by researchers in the medium of radio, tackling such key questions as the future of the radio spectrum, the new commercial radio business models, the function of community radio stations, and the development of university radio stations, amongst others. As such, this volume is integral to an understanding of the compound dimensions of the sound and radio media research currently being carried out in countries as varied as the United Kingdom, Spain, Poland, Finland, Portugal, Brazil and Argentina.
Does the growing economic might of regional superpowers like Brazil mean that dependency theory of the 1960s was all wrong? The answer to this and many other enigmas of development is found in Sub-Imperialism Revisited, a theoretically rigorous study by the brilliant Mexican analyst Adrián Sotelo Valencia. In analysing the 21st Century conditions of Latin America, Sotelo systematically explores the concept of "sub-imperialism" as advanced in the pioneering work of Ruy Mauro Marini. Himself a former student of Marini, Sotelo elucidates the explanatory power of a fully Marxist conception of imperialism and underdevelopment while providing considerable insight into opposing conceptions of dependency. This timely book ultimately enables readers to appreciate why radical dependency theory remains more relevant today than ever.
This book gives insight into the ongoing work of the forum on Philosophy, Engineering and Technology (fPET), which brings together philosophers and engineers from all over the world to discuss philosophical issues of engineering across disciplinary boundaries. Drawing on presentations and conversations at the fPET 2020 online conference hosted by the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María in Chile, the chapters establish connections and describe discoveries that have so far been neglected in the discussions held within the young discipline of philosophy of engineering. This volume appeals to students and researchers in the field, through twenty-four proposals brought forward by leading s...
